A cross-gen bundle gives you access to a game’s versions for two console generations within the same platform family—for example, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, or Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. The exact versions, upgrade rights, and physical-disc requirements depend on the game and edition. It does not, by itself, mean the game works across PlayStation and Xbox or includes cross-play or save transfer.
What a cross-gen bundle includes
“Cross-gen” means cross-generation: one purchase or edition covers a game on older and newer consoles in the same family. Activision defines the digital Call of Duty: Vanguard Cross-Gen Bundle as the base game for PS4 and PS5, or Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Its Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 page describes the same general arrangement for its digital cross-gen editions: both console generations within a single PlayStation or Xbox family.

Those examples illustrate the term, not a universal package. A bundle may provide two downloadable versions, a code for another version, or a disc-based upgrade path. Check the exact edition description rather than assuming what “cross-gen” includes.
What it does not mean
- Not cross-family ownership: A PlayStation entitlement does not automatically provide an Xbox copy, or vice versa. Activision says Vanguard’s entitlement stays within the same console family: PS4 to PS5 or Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S. See the Vanguard editions FAQ.
- Not cross-play: Cross-gen describes which console-generation versions you can access; it does not establish whether players on different platforms can play together.
- Not cross-progression or save transfer: Access to two versions does not guarantee that progress or saves move between them. EA’s Jedi: Survivor saved-data guidance sets out transfer conditions and says data cannot transfer between PlayStation and Xbox.
Physical and digital editions can differ
Format matters. Activision’s Black Ops 7 edition page distinguishes its physical editions: the Xbox physical cross-gen edition covers both generations; the PS4 physical cross-gen edition includes a code for a PS5 digital copy; and the PS5 physical edition is PS5-only. If both versions appear when installing on PS5, Activision says to install the PS5 version. Check the Black Ops 7 editions page for those edition-specific details.

A disc-based upgrade can also require the original disc and compatible hardware. For Vanguard, Activision says a PS4 disc is required to access the PS5 digital upgrade, so it will not work on a discless PS5. The same FAQ says physical editions do not operate on Xbox Series S. These are Vanguard-specific conditions, not rules that apply to every cross-gen game.
How to check what a particular bundle gives you
- Match the console family. Confirm whether the listing covers PlayStation or Xbox, and name-check both generations you want to use.
- Check the format and included versions. Look for whether the edition is digital or physical, whether it includes both versions directly, or whether a code or upgrade is involved.
- Read disc and hardware conditions. If the upgrade depends on a disc, confirm that the newer console has a disc drive and that the disc is required when you play.
- Check separate features separately. Find the game’s own terms for cross-play, cross-progression, or save transfer; the cross-gen label does not answer those questions.
- Verify the exact edition before buying. Editions differ even within the same game, as Activision’s Black Ops 7 physical versions demonstrate.
Publisher examples are not interchangeable
Vanguard and Black Ops 7 show how publishers use “cross-gen” for access across generations within a single console family, while varying the details by format and edition. EA also described Battlefield 2042’s bundle as digital access to both console-generation versions and specified which digital editions included it.
