Choose the dish for the day’s activity, and weigh its ingredients against what you could sell or process instead.
Is cooking worth it in Stardew Valley?
Usually, yes, when a meal’s effect helps with the task ahead or you need its restoration. It is generally a poor default production chain for profit: the Stardew Valley Wiki says most recipes sell for less than the cost or opportunity value of their ingredients. For maximum profit, it generally recommends processing ingredients in a Preserves Jar, Keg, Mayonnaise Machine, or Cheese Press instead. Stardew Valley Wiki: Cooking
Before cooking, ask what you need the food to do. A buff can be worth more than a dish’s sale value if it improves a planned activity; food made from abundant, low-value ingredients may also be a sensible way to restore health and energy. Consider what the ingredients could earn elsewhere, whether the meal will replace a more useful food buff, and whether you are working toward recipe completion.
Which foods are worth making for a specific goal?
Farming: Complete Breakfast or Tom Kha Soup
Both meals provide Farming +2. Complete Breakfast also adds 50 Max Energy, but takes a Fried Egg, Milk, Hashbrowns, and Pancakes, making it a more involved option. Tom Kha Soup uses a coconut, shrimp, and common mushroom. Choose based on which ingredients you can spare and whether the extra Max Energy is useful for your workday. Stardew Valley Wiki: Energy

Fishing: Lobster Bisque
Lobster Bisque provides Fishing +3 and 50 Max Energy; its listed buff lasts 16 minutes and 47 seconds. It requires lobster and milk. That is a strong listed Fishing buff, but the lobster requirement and recipe source can make it less convenient than alternatives. Stardew Valley Wiki: Energy
Health and energy restoration
Choose a dish with substantial restoration using ingredients you can spare. Food without buffs can restore health and energy without removing an active food buff, so it can be useful when you need recovery but want to keep your activity bonus. The restoration values for individual dishes are not listed here; check the dish’s entry before spending scarce ingredients. Stardew Valley Wiki: Buffs

Luck, speed, and exploration
For a day focused on exploring, mining, or another activity where a buff is useful, compare the relevant effect and duration with the ingredients’ opportunity cost. A meal’s buff replaces the prior food’s ordinary buffs, so eating a new buffed dish can mean giving up an effect you still need. A drink buff can generally coexist with a food buff; Luck, Speed, and Max Energy are the categories that can stack across food and drink. Stardew Valley Wiki: Buffs
When does cooked food make money?
Do not treat a recipe’s sale price as proof that it is profitable: the ingredients may be worth more sold raw or processed another way. The Wiki identifies Algae Soup and Pale Broth as notable exceptions because cooking is the only way to process algae; it reports that they can add 40g and 100g, respectively. Those figures describe the cooking-profit exceptions, not a general return from cooking.

Sashimi can be profitable with fish worth less than 75g, but that threshold has profession caveats. Most fish are generally better processed in a Fish Smoker, and fish requested through Help Wanted quests may be worth saving because those requests generally pay triple a fish’s base value. Other recipes the Wiki lists as profitable can depend on conditions such as ingredient value, quality, or homemade mill inputs. Check the recipe’s specific assumptions before turning ingredients into meals. Stardew Valley Wiki: Cooking
A practical profit check is to compare the cooked dish’s sale value with the ingredients’ sale value and their best available processing alternative. Include any bought inputs and profession modifiers. If the meal’s buff or restoration matters, count that gameplay benefit too; if it does not, processing or selling the ingredients is often the better choice.

How do food buffs and Qi Seasoning work?
- Only one food’s ordinary buffs can be active at a time; a newly eaten buffed food replaces the previous food buffs.
- Food without buffs can restore health and energy without removing an active food buff.
- One food buff and one drink buff can generally coexist. Luck, Speed, and Max Energy are the categories that can stack across food and drink.
Qi Seasoning is a late-game modifier purchased from Qi’s Walnut Room for 10 Qi Gems per stack of ten, according to the Wiki. It makes a dish Gold quality, increases health and energy restoration by 80%, raises sale price by 50%, increases non-Speed buffs by one level, and extends buff duration by 50%. Treat these as effects of seasoned dishes, not the normal value of a recipe. Stardew Valley Wiki: Cooking

If you are pursuing the cooking collection or achievements, making recipes has value beyond their immediate buffs or sale price. The Wiki lists Cook for making 10 recipes, Sous Chef for 25, and Gourmet Chef for every recipe. In that case, the ingredients spent on a recipe can contribute to completion even when the dish is not a strong everyday meal or profit-maker. Stardew Valley Wiki: Cooking
