Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor the Citra/Azahar workflow described in the cited guides, use .3ds for a cartridge dump and .cia for an installed or digital title. The right file also depends on your emulator and whether it can access the keys needed to decrypt an encrypted dump; the extension alone does not guarantee a game will load.
Which format should you choose?
| Source of the game | Format described for Citra/Azahar | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| Physical cartridge | .3ds |
A cartridge dump. The guide also describes building a .cia from a cartridge. Citra/Azahar cartridge-dumping guide |
| Installed or digital title | .cia |
The guide identifies CIA as the output for an installed or digital title. Citra/Azahar guide to getting games |
These are recommendations for the documented Citra/Azahar workflow, not a universal file-format rule for every emulator. Check the current documentation for the specific software and build you plan to use.
What do .3DS and .CIA mean here?
.3ds
The Citra/Azahar dumping guide presents .3ds as the cartridge-dump option. Choose it when you want the cartridge image file described by that guide. Cartridge-dumping guide
.cia
The same workflow describes creating a CIA from a cartridge, while its companion guide identifies CIA with installed or digital titles. Both .3ds and .cia are used in the documented Citra workflow, but they correspond to different ways of obtaining or packaging a title. Cartridge-dumping guide · Guide to getting games

Libretro’s documentation for its Citra core lists .3ds, .3dsx, .elf, .axf, .cci, .cxi, and .app as loadable extensions. That list applies to the Libretro Citra core; it does not mean every extension is the same kind of game dump or that every emulator supports them. Libretro Citra core documentation
What if the file will not open?
Check encryption and key requirements before assuming the extension is wrong. The Citra/Azahar guide says an encrypted dump may require system keys from your own console, and Libretro’s Citra core documentation says encrypted games require AES keys. What equipment is needed to transfer a dump?
The Citra/Azahar dumping guide lists an SD card and card reader for transferring the file to a PC. Those are transfer accessories, not factors in choosing between .3ds and .cia. Citra/Azahar cartridge-dumping guide
Use copies from games you own
The Citra-oriented guide frames its instructions around copying games from a console you own and says it does not host games or recommend downloading them from ROM sites. Copyright rules differ by jurisdiction, so that guidance should not be taken as a legal conclusion for every location. Citra/Azahar guide to getting games
