After Assassin’s Creed, Altaïr becomes a reforming Mentor of the Assassin Brotherhood. Assassin’s Creed Revelations fills in the rest of his story through memories Ezio uncovers: Altaïr faces betrayal and personal loss, returns to Masyaf, and ultimately seals himself inside his library with the Apple of Eden.
How Altaïr’s story continues after the first game
Assassin’s Creed Revelations is the main game that reveals what happens to Altaïr after the events of the original Assassin’s Creed. Ezio follows Altaïr’s trail and finds artifacts that preserve memories of the older Assassin. Ubisoft describes the game as allowing players to fight as both Ezio and Altaïr, while framing Altaïr’s later story through those memories: Ubisoft’s official Revelations page.
Altaïr reforms the Assassin Brotherhood
After taking control of the Brotherhood with the Apple of Eden’s help, Altaïr becomes a reformer. He works to spread the Assassins’ principles—including their commitment to free will—beyond the order’s fortresses and bureaus. Ubisoft’s retrospective describes glimpses of these later years in its account of the series.
Betrayal and loss bring Altaïr back to Masyaf
Altaïr’s later life is not only a story of leadership. A plot recap from Prima Games says members of the Brotherhood betray him, and that he loses his son and Maria. He eventually returns to Masyaf. These family and plot details come from Prima Games’ recap; Ubisoft’s overview establishes the broad arc but does not provide the same level of detail.

What happens to Altaïr’s library?
Before sealing himself away, Altaïr entrusts the Polo brothers with his library, Codex, and keys. He then locks himself inside the library with the Apple of Eden, where he dies. Centuries later, Ezio reaches the library and discovers the legacy Altaïr left behind. In the game’s story, that discovery helps connect Altaïr’s past to Desmond’s modern-day journey.
Does Altaïr appear as a playable character in Revelations?
Yes, but Revelations is not a game in which Altaïr is the principal playable character throughout. Ezio’s journey provides the framework: he finds artifacts that let players experience selected memories of Altaïr’s later life. Ubisoft’s official description says players can fight as both men, and its retrospective explains the memory-artifact structure.
