It does not start a new character or choose an ending. You need to have defeated Rennala and have a Larval Tear; your starting class sets the minimum for each attribute, so you cannot lower a stat below its original class value.
What Rebirth changes
Rebirth is Elden Ring’s stat-respec option. You can reallocate the attributes you have raised through leveling to suit a different build, such as one focused on different weapons, spells, or play styles. The in-game Larval Tear description summarizes the mechanic: “Being born anew allows the reallocation of attributes boosted by leveling up.”
It is a character-build choice, not a new-game start, a change of starting class, or an ending selection. The available guides describe the stat reassignment; they do not establish every possible quest-state edge case, so do not assume that every story flag is unaffected.
What you need before choosing Rebirth
- Defeat Rennala: She is at the Academy of Raya Lucaria. After the fight, she remains available to interact with for Rebirth.
- Have a Larval Tear: Rebirth requires this in-game item. The item is consumed only if you change your attributes; cancelling the process does not cost it.
How to reassign your attributes
- Speak to Rennala after defeating her and choose the Rebirth option.
- Redistribute your leveled attributes. You must keep each attribute at or above the minimum set by your starting class.
- Review the allocation and confirm only when you are satisfied. The cited guide describes confirming after all levels have been assigned.
What happens to your levels and starting class?
Rebirth reallocates the attributes gained through leveling; it does not let you erase your starting class’s base stats. Those minimums remain in place, which can limit how far you can shift points toward a new build. Before confirming, compare the requirements of the weapons or spells you want to use with those class minimums and the points available to redistribute.

The documented effect is a change to your attribute distribution. The guides describe neither a new character nor an ending choice. They do not establish every possible interaction with quest flags, so a broader guarantee about all story states is not supported.
