In Civilization VII’s original Age system, the entire game moves into the next Age together. Your leader stays, but you choose a civilization to represent your empire in the new Age and select Legacy benefits to carry forward. The world and its gameplay systems evolve, too. That description needs a version caveat: 2K announced a major Test of Time overhaul in February 2026, including an option to play as one civilization across every Age, and the sources cited here do not establish the overhaul’s final live rules as of October 8, 2026.
What changes when an Age ends?
The game’s three Ages are Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern. In the original design, all players transition together. The transition is not simply a change of era on the calendar: it changes which civilization represents your empire and can alter the world and the systems available to play with.
The official support overview explains that your leader remains the same while your civilization represents the empire as it exists in each Age. Some gameplay elements are exclusive to a particular Age; others carry over based on your previous civilization and your successes. 2K’s Ages overview describes that broader structure.
What do you choose at the transition?
In the original transition design, you select a civilization available for the next Age and choose Legacy benefits to retain. The developer diary describes the transition as selecting a new civilization, choosing which Legacies to keep, and watching the game world evolve. The Civilization VII developer diary on Ages also explains that choices can be shaped by historical or geographical connections and by civilizations unlocked through a leader’s identity.

Choose a civilization for the next Age
Your leader and your civilization are separate choices in this system: the leader stays, while the civilization representing your empire changes. The available next-Age choices can depend on unlocks and game settings. When comparing them, consider their unique abilities, their connection to your current civilization, and how well their strengths fit your intended strategy.
Select Legacy benefits
Progress on Legacy Paths can earn points that you spend on benefits for the next Age. Which benefits you can select depends on your progress, settings, and the version you are playing. The original design makes these choices part of the transition rather than an automatic carryover of every past achievement.

Does the Age transition work the same way in every version?
Not necessarily. In February 2026, 2K announced Test of Time as a major upcoming update, naming a total rework of Victories and an option to play as one civilization through every Age. The announcement described the update as planned for spring; it does not, by itself, establish the final rules in the live game on October 8, 2026. Check the current patch notes and the transition screen in your own game before relying on the original switch-every-Age description. The February 2026 Test of Time announcement is the relevant official statement.
Older official notes show that transition-related details have also been adjusted over time. For example, a June 2025 update described configurable Legacy Path and Crisis options and a way to bypass civilization unlock requirements. These are dated notes, not proof that every setting or transition rule remains unchanged after Test of Time. The June 2025 patch notes provide that historical context.

Why might a transition or ability differ in an existing save?
The save’s age and the patch version can matter. 2K’s December 2025 patch notes warn that some new abilities or effects may not appear in an existing save until you start a new game or advance to the next Age. If a guide’s transition screen or an ability does not match yours, check the game version and whether the save has reached the next Age before assuming the guide describes your current rules. The December 2025 patch notes document that update behavior.
Other older transition notes include City-States becoming Friendly Independent Powers rather than disappearing, and adjustments to the Loyalty Crisis. Because these are historical patch details, they should not be treated as guaranteed behavior in every current version. The relevant older official patch notes are dated guidance, not a substitute for checking the current game.
