If your Minecraft Java account stopped working, the next step depends on whether you migrated it from Mojang to Microsoft. The migration period is over: Minecraft Help says it ended on December 18, 2023, and a Mojang account that was never migrated cannot be migrated now. If you did migrate—or bought Minecraft with a Microsoft account—a failed sign-in does not prove you have lost the game. First check which Microsoft account owns it.
What happened to Minecraft Java accounts?
Minecraft announced in October 2020 that Mojang accounts would transition to Microsoft accounts, citing account security and a unified account for Minecraft games. Minecraft’s account guide says a Microsoft account has been required to play Minecraft versions since July 25, 2022. Minecraft’s original account-transition announcement explains the change.
The dates in Minecraft’s notices refer to different milestones. A May 2023 announcement said the move had completed on September 19, 2023, and that users could no longer sign in to migrate. The current Minecraft Help article gives December 18, 2023, as the date the migration process and grace period officially ended. It also says Minecraft Support no longer assists with migration-related queries. Read the 2023 completion announcement and Minecraft Help’s current migration guidance.
First identify which situation applies
| Account history | What to do | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| You never migrated your Mojang account | Migration is closed. Minecraft’s stated route to play is to purchase Minecraft using a Microsoft account. | Support will not migrate the old account. Do not count on recovering its capes or skins, or on the old username being available. |
| You migrated, or purchased Minecraft with a Microsoft account | Check the Microsoft account that owns the game, verify the purchase, then check the Launcher or Microsoft Store. | A sign-in problem or the wrong account being selected can look like lost ownership. Check before buying again. |
These paths are different: purchasing may be relevant if the Mojang account was never migrated, but it is not a fix for a password, account-selection, or Launcher sign-in problem. Minecraft Help describes the migration status and the purchase route for unmigrated accounts in its migration FAQ.

If you think you migrated or already own the game
Check the Microsoft identity tied to the purchase before making another one. Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC launched on June 7, 2022. Minecraft Help says players who own that PC version or migrated a Mojang account should have access to both PC editions. Minecraft Help’s PC edition FAQ describes edition access and ownership checks.
- Find the purchase account. Search your purchase confirmation email and note the Microsoft account that received it.
- Check its order history. Sign in to that Microsoft account and review Microsoft Order History for the Minecraft purchase.
- Check the Launcher account. Open the Minecraft Launcher and confirm the Microsoft account/profile shown. Look at the Java Edition button: “Play” or “Install” indicates a different state from “Buy Now,” but verify ownership in the account and Store as well.
- Check Microsoft Store ownership. Sign into the Store with the same Microsoft account and see which Minecraft PC editions it lists as owned.
- Recover account access if needed. If you cannot sign in to Microsoft, use the Microsoft Account Sign-in Helper, the locked or compromised account guidance, or the Microsoft account recovery form, as appropriate.
- Try the Xbox app sign-in route. Minecraft says signing into the Xbox app before opening Minecraft can sometimes resolve sign-in errors when you are sure you have the correct account. See Minecraft Launcher troubleshooting.
If the Mojang account was never migrated
Minecraft Help says an unmigrated Mojang account cannot be migrated now, and Support no longer handles migration-related queries. Its stated option for continuing to play is to purchase Minecraft using a Microsoft account; the current PC offering is Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC. This is specific to an account that was never migrated—not a general remedy for a failed login.
The old account’s data does not all behave the same way:
- Single-player worlds: World files may still be stored on your computer. Their presence is not guaranteed, and the files alone do not grant access to play; Minecraft Help says you need to purchase Minecraft using a Microsoft account.
- Multiplayer identity: If a new Microsoft account joins an existing multiplayer world or server, it enters as a new player, without the old inventory, and spawns at the default spawn point. Minecraft Help says stored items may still be retrieved by going to the old base. Server behavior and data retention can vary.
- Capes and skins: Capes and skins tied to the previous Java account are not recoverable through creating a new account.
- Username: The previous username may or may not be available when creating a new account.
These expectations are from Minecraft Help’s migration FAQ; it does not promise that every local file remains intact or that every server will preserve player data.

- The classic UNO card game builds fun on game night with a Minecraft theme.
- UNO Minecraft features a deck and storage tin decorated with graphics from the popular video game.
- Players match colors and numbers to the card on top of the discard pile as in the classic game.
- The Creeper card unique to this deck forces other players to draw 3 cards.
- Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.
Why a Java account may appear to be gone
- The account was never migrated. Mojang credentials no longer provide a route to migrate after the migration period ended.
- The Launcher is signed into a different Microsoft account. The account you use for email or another Microsoft service may not be the one that owns Minecraft.
- The Microsoft account cannot be accessed. In that case, use Microsoft’s account recovery tools rather than trying to recreate the Minecraft account.
- The purchase is not recognized in the current app session. Confirm the Microsoft identity and Store or Launcher ownership; Minecraft notes that signing into the Xbox app first can sometimes resolve a sign-in error.
Minecraft’s account transition announcement describes the move, while its Launcher troubleshooting FAQ covers sign-in troubleshooting.
