If you choose Spare when Sans offers mercy during the Genocide Route fight, he traps you in a bone attack until your HP runs out. The Game Over screen follows: Sans cannot be spared, and you must defeat him to progress.
What happens when you choose Spare?
Sans pauses the fight and appears to offer mercy. Accepting it does not end the encounter peacefully. Instead, bones cover the bullet board until your HP is depleted, then the Game Over screen appears with sped-up Dogsong. Sans taunts you and says, “if we’re really friends… you won’t come back.” The battle reference describes this as the outcome of accepting his offer.

In an exceptional case, if the Game Over screen does not trigger, the bones eventually retract after an unusually long interval and the game softlocks. That is not the expected result of choosing Spare.
Can you spare Sans?
No. The apparent offer of mercy is a trap in this encounter, not a way to spare Sans or peacefully finish the fight. To advance, keep choosing FIGHT; other actions do not move the battle forward.

What if you try to spare him again?
If you have tried sparing Sans before, his later dialogue changes. He recognizes the repeat attempt and comments on your anger and your supposed friendship.
