Microsoft’s published gift terms don’t say what happens automatically when the recipient already owns the game. An Xbox digital gift is sent as a single-use code, and nothing in the published material documents a duplicate-ownership fix, automatic cancellation, conversion to credit, or refund. Check the recipient’s library before you buy. If you have already bought a game they own, don’t assume a refund: review the order and contact Xbox Support with the details.
How an Xbox digital game gift works
An Xbox digital gift is delivered as a code, not as a game placed directly into someone’s library. Xbox Wire’s holiday gifting guide, dated December 5, 2025, describes choosing a game, add-on or subscription as a gift and having the recipient redeem the code. Because that guide is from the 2025 holiday season, check current Xbox pages for any later changes to the flow.

- Choose the game as a gift when you buy it, following the gifting option described in Xbox Wire’s guide to buying a digital game as a gift.
- The recipient receives the code.
- The recipient redeems the code with their own Microsoft account, using the steps in Microsoft Support’s guide to redeeming a gift card or code.
The rules that are documented
Microsoft’s Gift Terms and Conditions (Digital Goods) set out the core mechanics:
- Single use. A gift code can be redeemed only once. It cannot be redeemed a second time, and it cannot be transferred after it has been redeemed.
- Same country or region. Gifts can only be purchased and redeemed by users in the same country or region.
- Recipient account. The code is redeemed to the recipient’s Microsoft account.
What happens if the recipient already owns the game
The published terms cover how codes work, but not what the recipient sees when a code is applied to a game they already own. Neither the gift terms nor the Xbox Wire guide describes a specific error message, an automatic cancellation of the gift, a swap for a different title, or a credit to the giver. Any article or support reply that promises one of those outcomes is going beyond the documented material.

In practice, that leaves two facts you can rely on:
- Because each code is single-use, a redeemed code cannot be reused for a different game or account.
- Whatever happens to a duplicate gift is not a documented entitlement, so it should be handled as a support question rather than assumed.
Refunds: what the terms say
Microsoft’s digital gift terms state: “Gift recipients are not entitled to a refund or cooling off period, and you acknowledge that no refund will be made, except as required by law.”

That sentence is written to the person buying the gift, so it answers the question most givers ask: a refund is not something the terms promise. The only opening is the phrase “except as required by law.” Whether a consumer-law right applies to your purchase depends on where you live, and this article can’t determine that. Before you buy a specific game
- Ask the recipient which games they own, or check their library if you have access to it. This is the only check the published material clearly supports.
- Confirm that you and the recipient are in the same country or region.
- If you are unsure what they own, a gift card lets them pick the title they want.
- Keep your order confirmation and the gift details until the recipient has redeemed the code.
If you already bought a game they own
- Open the order history for the Microsoft account you bought the game with, and keep a copy of the order details.
- Ask the recipient whether they have tried to redeem the code and what message they saw, if any.
- Contact Xbox Support with the order details, the title, and the fact that the recipient already owns it. Ask Xbox to review the case.
- Do not ask the recipient to redeem the code a second time, and do not post the code publicly.
Any refund or exchange is a decision Xbox Support makes on your case, not a remedy the published gift terms guarantee.
