What Happens If You Quit in Hades? Quit vs. Give Up Explained

Check whether Hades offers Quit or Give Up: one preserves your run at save points, while the other rolls the attempt back.

Check the pause menu before you confirm: Quit returns you to the main menu while preserving your escape attempt; Give Up rolls the run back to before that attempt. Supergiant Games says Hades autosaves at the beginning and end of each chamber, so the option shown depends on where you are in the room.

Quit and Give Up have different outcomes

Menu option When it may appear What happens
Quit At a chamber’s start, or after defeating its enemies and accepting the reward Returns you to the main menu without losing run progress.
Give Up After taking damage, buying an item in a shop, or defeating enemies without accepting the chamber reward After confirmation, rolls progress back to before the escape attempt. The game should warn you before you confirm.

These conditions and outcomes come from a Supergiant Games support answer dated January 8, 2020. Read both the menu label and any warning; “quit” in the everyday sense is not necessarily the same as selecting the in-game Quit option.

Why the menu option changes during a chamber

Supergiant’s support answer states, “Hades autosaves at the beginning and end of every chamber.” The end-of-chamber save follows defeating the enemies and accepting the reward. Between those save points, actions such as taking damage or buying an item can leave the game offering Give Up instead.

If you want to leave without abandoning the attempt, use the in-game Quit option when it is available. Do not rely on force-closing the game or cutting power to preserve a run: the same support answer says a hard crash during an unsafe state can be treated as Give Up. It does not establish that every kind of force-close behaves identically on every platform.

What happens to permanent upgrades?

Losing an escape attempt is not the same as losing all longer-term progression. Supergiant’s Hades FAQ describes permanent progression systems, while PlayStation’s Hades product page distinguishes temporary Boons from permanent upgrades. A run’s temporary Boons and progress are separate from permanent upgrades; do not assume that every resource, prophecy, dialogue flag, or other individual item follows the same rule in every quit or crash scenario.

Cross-saves and missing save files

Cross-save syncing is separate from safely quitting a run. Supergiant documents cross-saves between PC/Mac and Nintendo Switch; it says other platform combinations are not supported and that PS4 save data does not transfer to PS5. Check the current Hades technical support guide for platform-specific details.

If a save is missing or appears corrupted, the same guide lists Windows and Mac save locations and describes recovery using recent .sav or .sav.bak files. It also identifies antivirus restrictions and cloud-folder synchronization as possible causes of saving problems. Recovery depends on the files available, so the guide does not guarantee that every lost save can be restored.
