Positive affinity can make a hit stronger; negative affinity can make one weaker. It is a probability—not a damage bonus added to every attack.
What does affinity do?
Each physical hit has a chance to become a critical hit based on the weapon’s affinity. With positive affinity, a successful critical deals more physical damage; with negative affinity, the occasional negative critical deals less. For the mechanics below, the combat reference is specific to Monster Hunter Wilds Version 1.041.00.00.
- Positive affinity: A critical hit uses a 1.25× physical damage modifier, equivalent to 25% more weapon damage on that hit, according to the Mobalytics beginner guide, updated March 4, 2026, and the versioned combat mechanics reference.
- Negative affinity: A negative critical uses a 0.75× physical modifier—25% less physical damage on that hit, as described by those guides.
These modifiers apply to the critical hit, not to every strike in a combo. A weapon with 20% affinity, for example, has a 20% chance for a physical hit to crit under the relevant conditions; that does not mean every hit deals 20% more damage.
Affinity and critical damage are different
Affinity controls the chance of a critical hit. Critical Boost changes how much physical damage a successful critical deals. The combat reference lists Critical Boost modifiers from 1.28× to 1.40× across its five levels. That is a separate build lever from raising affinity: a stronger critical modifier matters more often when the build also lands criticals regularly. See the Wilds Field Guide, fact-checked August 4, 2026, for its discussion of evaluating the whole attack plan.

Critical Eye raises affinity; Critical Boost raises the critical-hit damage modifier. Check the current in-game skill descriptions when planning a specific build, since exact skill-level recommendations and full current affinity-cap behavior are not established here.
Does affinity increase elemental damage?
Ordinary critical hits increase the physical portion of a hit, not its elemental portion. Critical Element is the exception: without that skill, do not assume that more affinity also means more elemental damage. When comparing elemental weapons or builds, assess raw physical and elemental damage separately.
Is negative affinity bad?
Not automatically. Negative affinity means some physical hits can deal less damage, but whether that tradeoff is worthwhile depends on the weapon’s other stats, its attack pattern, available build options, and how often you can meet conditions that improve its performance. Compare the complete setup rather than rejecting a weapon based on one number.
How to compare affinity on weapons and builds
- Estimate usable affinity. Consider the attacks you use and the conditions you can realistically maintain, rather than treating every listed bonus as permanently active.
- Check the critical payoff. Look at your critical-damage modifier as well as affinity; chance and payoff are separate.
- Account for the monster. Consider which hit zones you can reliably reach and how the monster’s state affects your attack plan.
- Include upkeep and attack details. Sharpness, move choice, and range can affect the result, so do not compare affinity in isolation.
- Decide what you are optimizing. Evaluate the physical portion, the elemental matchup, or both, and account for Critical Element if elemental criticals are part of the build.
The combat reference notes that move, hit zone, sharpness, range, affinity, and monster state all affect damage outcomes. The Field Guide likewise emphasizes judging affinity alongside critical damage and the conditions a hunter can actually use.

Affinity as an equipment choice
Affinity can also be a deliberate equipment-building choice. PlayStation’s endgame guide describes Artian weapon materials with an Attack Infusion or an Affinity Infusion, which increase the corresponding stat. Choosing between them is a decision about the weapon’s overall setup, not a guarantee that the affinity option is always better.
