Roblox has not officially established a general meaning for error code 261 in the error-code reference available here. That reference does not list 261 and directs players with an unlisted code or message to contact Roblox Support. Check Roblox Status first; if there is no service issue and the error persists, send Support the exact message and details about your device and what you were doing.
Is Roblox error 261 an official error code?
The Roblox Support article Roblox Error Codes lists several other codes but does not include 261. Its stated next step for a code or message that is not listed is to contact Roblox Support. Because the reference does not define 261, its exact cause is not officially established there.
A Roblox Developer Forum search result has the title “Error 261 – Account stuck in matchmaking loop, friends can’t join.” The discussion could not be independently inspected, so its title is only an unverified report about one situation—not proof that every instance of error 261 means a matchmaking problem.

What to do if you see error 261
- Check Roblox Status. Roblox Support recommends checking the Roblox Status page when you have trouble joining an experience, using Roblox, or playing.
- If there is a service issue, wait and retry. Roblox says an outage or maintenance can make joining delayed or unsuccessful. Wait a few moments, then try again; see What happens when Roblox is down?
- Contact Roblox Support if the code remains unexplained or keeps appearing. Use the Roblox Support contact form. Include your username, affected device, the exact error text, what you were doing when it appeared, and when the problem began. Choose the relevant help category and describe the issue clearly.
What not to assume
- Do not treat the matchmaking-loop forum title as Roblox’s confirmed definition of error 261.
- Do not assume a router change, VPN, paid software, or any other specific fix will resolve this code; the available official information does not identify a cause or a code-specific fix.
