Their main job is refilling Hornet’s Red Tools, and they also pay for three wishes in Bone Bottom. Most enemies drop them, and they also come from natural deposits, breakable objects and items such as Shard Bundles.
What Shell Shards are
Shell Shards are a fictional material that exists only within the game’s world. The Hollow Knight Wiki describes them as “Hardened fragments of shell and bone, used in the crafting of tools and traps.” The wiki also records an NPC line from Flick the Fixer: “Those shards are valuable, alright. Brilliant for crafting and fixing, very versatile.” Both are in-game text reproduced on a community-maintained wiki, not quotes from Team Cherry.
What you spend them on
Refilling Red Tools
Red Tools are Hornet’s consumable tools, and refilling them costs Shell Shards. The cost depends on the tool. The per-tool figures are listed on each tool’s wiki entry and are not reproduced in this guide, so check the entry before you spend a large batch.
Normally you refill tools by resting at a Bench. If you have the Architect Crest, Craft Bind lets you refill tools anywhere for the same shard cost.

Storage capacity
Hornet starts with a maximum capacity of 400 Shell Shards. Tool Pouch upgrades can raise that limit to 800. Shards above your cap are not kept, so spend or bank them before exploring a large area with many shard sources.

Where to get Shell Shards
The Hollow Knight Wiki says most enemies drop Shell Shards. Beyond combat, it lists natural deposits, breakable environmental objects and Shard Bundles. Yields vary by object and location, so the figures below apply only to the sources named.

The wiki gives the Wisp Thicket figure for large ammonite-like fossils at 24, while its general figure for those fossils is 33. Treat the table as location- and object-specific values, not a universal drop rate, and check the wiki’s area pages for the latest listed yields.

Shard Bundles
Shard Bundles are consumables. Using one from your inventory adds 80 shards. You can carry up to 20 bundles. Various merchants sell them for 50 shards each, and glowing item spots are another source. Because a bundle costs 50 and gives 80, buying one from a merchant returns a net gain of 30 shards, though it does not count against capacity in the same way as a drop does. Check the item’s wiki page for how it interacts with your cap before relying on it.

Shard totals also depend on what you find and when. Yields are listed per object or location, so a route that visits fewer of those sources will collect less, and the wiki does not give a best farming route.
For a single answer, you use Shell Shards to refill Red Tools and buy Bone Bottom wishes. You get them mainly by defeating enemies and breaking shard-bearing objects, with Shard Bundles as a stockpile option.
