What Is FNaF 8? Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach Explained

“FNaF 8” almost certainly refers to Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach, a standalone entry in the series in which a boy named Gregory is trapped overnight inside the Mega Pizzaplex. The official title carries no number, and the sources behind this article, including Nintendo’s listing and an academic paper that discusses the game, use the full name Security Breach. “FNaF 8” is best read as an informal label for that game, not an official title or confirmed series ordinal.

Why “FNaF 8” is an informal label

Nothing in the official naming for Security Breach establishes “FNaF 8” as a title. The name appears to come from readers counting the series’ numbered and mainline entries. Because the sources available here do not document how that count is made, this article does not confirm that Security Breach is the eighth installment. If you are searching for a specific title, use the full name Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach, which is the name storefronts and publications use.

What Security Breach is

Security Breach is a standalone Five Nights at Freddy’s game developed by Steel Wool Studios and published by ScottGames. Its premise is simple: Gregory is trapped overnight in Freddy Fazbear’s Mega Pizzaplex, a much larger location than the restaurants of earlier games.

According to Nintendo’s description of the Switch version, the game centers on survival and evasion. Players explore the building and deal with animatronics that pursue them, using security cameras and hiding places to avoid being caught. The emphasis on exploration and camera-based awareness is what separates the experience from the fixed-position night shifts of the earliest titles.

Release dates, explained

Three dates appear in connection with the game, and they describe different things. Mixing them up is the most common source of confusion.

Date What it marks Source
2021 Original release of Security Breach as a standalone game DiGRA conference paper describing the game
July 25, 2023 Release of Ruin, the story DLC DiGRA conference paper
April 19, 2023 Release date shown on Nintendo’s US Switch digital listing; this is the date for that listing, not the launch of the original game Nintendo’s official US Switch listing

Ruin: what the expansion is

Ruin is free story DLC for Security Breach. It continues the game’s narrative rather than adding a separate, unrelated mode. The DiGRA paper gives its release date as July 25, 2023.

Whether you receive Ruin depends on where you buy the base game. The Epic Games Store listing states that Ruin is included with purchase of the base game on Epic. That statement applies to Epic only. The sources here do not establish whether other storefronts bundle it in the same way, so check the store page before assuming the expansion is included.

Which version you are buying

The version information available in these sources covers two situations:

  • Nintendo Switch: Nintendo’s official US listing describes a digital edition of the game.
  • Epic Games Store: Ruin is included with purchase of the base game.

Physical retail editions, collector’s items, and printed guides are not covered by the sources used for this article, so this article makes no claim about whether they exist or what they contain. Before purchasing, confirm three things on the storefront itself: the platform, whether the copy is digital or physical, and whether Ruin is included or sold separately.

Quick answers for common searches

  • Is it FNaF 8? Readers use that name for Security Breach, but it is not the official title.
  • Is Ruin a separate game? No. It is story DLC for Security Breach.
  • When did the game come out? The original standalone release is listed as 2021 in the cited paper. The April 19, 2023 date belongs to the Switch digital listing.
