Why the new NFL 2K game stalled
In an interview with Game File journalist Stephen Totilo, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said the creative plan did not work out as intended. Insider Gaming reported his comments on May 6, 2026, including: “What we hoped would come to fruition creatively did not” and “Some of the stuff we tried to do didn’t work out creatively.” Zelnick also left open a possible restart if an opportunity arose; the report does not establish that a restart is underway. That is the latest reported status, not a formal announcement that the game has been permanently cancelled. No release date, named console title, or new development plan was established in the reporting.
What 2K originally announced
On March 10, 2020, the NFL and 2K announced a multi-year partnership for multiple football games. 2K described them as non-simulation experiences and said they were in early development, with launches expected to begin in calendar year 2021. The NFL 2K series itself had a history before the deal: 2K’s announcement says the franchise ran from 1999 to 2004. The 2020 partnership therefore revived expectations for new NFL-branded 2K games, but it did not promise a direct simulation successor to those older games.
Was NFL 2K Playmakers the new console game?
No. NFL 2K Playmakers was a separate free-to-play mobile tactical card battler released in April 2024 for iOS and Android. Developed by Cat Daddy Games, it had players collect NFL player cards and build a roster. Its launch announcement noted optional in-game purchases. How Madden fits into the picture
In October 2025, EA and the NFL announced an expanded multi-year exclusive agreement and said Madden NFL would remain the exclusive action simulation game for NFL football. That helps explain the distinction in 2K’s original announcement: its planned games were described as non-simulation experiences. EA also said in that announcement that players logged more than 2 billion Madden NFL games each year and the equivalent of 23,000 NFL seasons each day. Those figures describe Madden engagement, not the status or audience demand for the 2K project. EA’s published figures

There is no confirmed release date or announced restart for a new NFL 2K console game in the latest reported status. Take-Two’s openness to restarting under the right circumstances leaves the door open, but it is not a commitment to resume development. Until Take-Two or 2K announces a concrete project, the most supportable description is that the console game stalled creatively and is not currently progressing toward release.
