In Genshin Impact, a sub-DPS is a character who adds damage to a team without needing as much on-field time as its main damage dealer. The character might keep dealing damage after you switch away, or briefly take the field to deliver a burst. It is a flexible team role, not an official character class.
What a sub-DPS does
A sub-DPS supplies additional damage around the main damage dealer’s time on the field. Often, you switch the character in to use an Elemental Skill or Elemental Burst, then switch back while that ability continues working. The continuing damage can also apply an element and help trigger the reactions your team is built around.
The label is broader than “off-field DPS.” Some sub-DPS characters contribute most of their damage through abilities that persist off-field; others deal a substantial amount during a short swap-in and then leave. GameWith Genshin Strategy Team describes sub-DPS as off-field characters that provide additional damage from their abilities, but that is one common use of the term rather than a rule that covers every team.
Sub-DPS vs. main DPS
The practical difference is where a character’s damage fits in the team’s rotation. A main DPS usually gets more of the team’s active field time, while a sub-DPS contributes damage around that window. These are team roles, not permanent labels attached to a character: weapons, artifacts, teammates, and rotation can change how a character is used.

| Role | Typical contribution | Field-time pattern |
|---|---|---|
| Main DPS | The team’s primary on-field damage window | Usually spends more time active |
| Sub-DPS | Additional damage, often with elemental application or reaction setup | Often contributes after a swap or during a brief swap-in |
This distinction is about a character’s job in a particular team, not a fixed ranking of characters or a universal damage threshold.
How to tell whether a character fits the role
Look at what the character does during the team’s actual rotation rather than relying on a role label alone. Check these points:

- Damage timing: Does a Skill or Burst keep dealing damage after you switch, or does the character need a short active window?
- Field time: Can the character contribute without interrupting the main damage dealer’s window?
- Elemental application: Does the ability apply an element that supports the reactions the team wants?
- Energy and rotation: If the damage depends on a Burst, can the character use it reliably on the team’s schedule? Burst-dependent damage needs enough Energy Recharge to support regular use.
- Other utility: Does the character also buff, heal, shield, or debuff? A sub-DPS can have one or more of these jobs alongside dealing damage.
Current role guides can help you find candidates, but treat their classifications as starting points. For example, the GameWith off-field character guide, last updated October 7, 2026, separates damage, support, and survivability contributions. Whether a character works as your sub-DPS still depends on the team and its rotation.

Off-field abilities let a character add damage while another character is active. When they apply an element as well, they can help set up Elemental Reactions without taking over the team’s main field-time window. This makes timing and compatibility important: a source of damage is useful only if its uptime, elemental application, and energy demands fit the rest of the rotation.
