It aims to raise frame rates, reduce micro-stutter, and fix graphical issues, but the result depends on your hardware, drivers, game version, and mod setup.
What does Sodium do in Minecraft?
Sodium changes how Minecraft renders the world on your computer. It is a performance-focused mod, not a new Minecraft edition, a server plugin, or a mod loader. The Sodium project describes it as “A high-performance rendering engine replacement for Minecraft, which greatly improves frame rates and reduces micro-stutter.” Sodium on Modrinth

Because it is client-side, Sodium affects the rendering experience on the player’s own computer; it does not need to be installed as a server plugin. Its focus is also distinct from other mods: Sodium targets rendering, while the project describes Lithium as optimizing other parts of the game.
Does Sodium increase FPS?
It can improve frame rates and smoothness, but there is no reliable universal FPS multiplier. The project says performance varies with the exact hardware and software configuration. A system limited by rendering work may benefit more than one constrained by another bottleneck, and outdated graphics drivers can contribute to crashes, rendering bugs, or poor performance. Keep graphics drivers current and treat any improvement as system-specific rather than guaranteed. Sodium project page

Do I need Fabric to use Sodium?
You need a compatible mod loader, but not necessarily Fabric. Sodium’s README says Fabric and NeoForge are supported since Sodium 0.6.0 and recommends Fabric for new users. Modrinth’s general compatibility information also lists Quilt, while the current installation guide names Fabric and NeoForge. Quilt compatibility should therefore be confirmed for the specific Sodium release you plan to use rather than assumed. Sodium README · Modrinth compatibility listing · Installation guide
A loader and a mod do different jobs: Fabric Loader (or NeoForge) loads compatible mods, while Sodium supplies the rendering optimization. Fabric Loader is also separate from Fabric API; some other Fabric mods require the API, but it is not the same component as the loader.

How to check whether a Sodium release fits your setup
- Identify your Minecraft Java version. Sodium files are version-specific. Check the project’s support policy and release listing for a build for your game version; support status can change over time. The policy updated June 16, 2026 labels Minecraft 26.2.x and 26.1.x current, with older branches carrying different statuses. Sodium support policy
- Choose a supported loader. Confirm that the exact Sodium file supports the loader you intend to use. Do not infer a loader’s compatibility from a different release.
- Check your graphics hardware and driver. For officially supported desktop graphics cards, Sodium calls for current drivers compatible with OpenGL 4.5 or newer. Its examples include Intel HD Graphics 500 Series (Skylake) or newer, NVIDIA GeForce 400 Series (Fermi) or newer, and AMD Radeon HD 7000 Series (GCN 1) or newer. Cards that meet Minecraft’s OpenGL 3.3 requirement may work, but older hardware is not guaranteed support. Sodium project page
- Install the loader, then Sodium. Follow the official installation guide for your launcher. Third-party launchers may integrate mod installation; with the official Minecraft Launcher, download the compatible file and place it in the mods folder.
For a specific example, the researched Modrinth listing for Minecraft 26.2 identifies Sodium 0.9.2 for Fabric. That release page describes changes including terrain-buffer allocation and item-rendering optimizations, bug fixes, and FRAPI support on NeoForge. Those details apply to that listed release and should not be generalized to other Minecraft versions or loader builds. Sodium 0.9.2 release listing
Hardware and platform limits
The project does not support Android devices or some Windows-on-ARM setups that use OpenGL translation layers such as GL4ES, ANGLE, or GLonD3D12. It also cautions that older graphics cards may work if they meet Minecraft’s OpenGL 3.3 requirement, but are not guaranteed support. Check the current project guidance for your specific hardware before troubleshooting a failed launch. Sodium project page

Using Sodium with shaders and other mods
Shaders
Sodium itself is not the shader-pack feature. The official installation guide names Iris as the companion mod for shader-pack support. Shader packs can add substantial rendering work, so you may need to reduce render distance or shader quality to keep performance acceptable. Installation guide
Fabric mod compatibility and Indium
Compatibility advice depends on versions. Sodium 0.5.x with Minecraft 1.20 or older may require Indium for certain Fabric-mod compatibility. The installation guide says Indium is no longer necessary as of Sodium 0.6.x. Check the Sodium, Minecraft, and Indium versions together instead of applying that older advice to every setup. Sodium, a loader, and a hardware upgrade are not interchangeable
- Sodium vs. Fabric Loader: Sodium is the rendering optimization mod; Fabric Loader is software that loads compatible mods.
- Sodium vs. Iris: Sodium focuses on rendering performance; Iris is the companion named by the official guide for shader-pack support.
- Sodium vs. a graphics-card upgrade: Sodium is software whose impact varies by system. The project’s performance guidance does not establish that it can replace a hardware upgrade for every player.
