PS7 usually means PowerShell 7: Microsoft’s cross-platform command-line shell and scripting and automation framework. It runs on Windows, Linux, and macOS. On Windows, it installs alongside Windows PowerShell 5.1 rather than replacing it, so the two can coexist.

What does PS7 mean?

PS7 is a shorthand for PowerShell 7. PowerShell combines an interactive command-line shell with a scripting language and tools for automation. It works with structured data such as JSON, CSV, and XML, as well as REST APIs and object models.

Microsoft announced PowerShell 7 on March 4, 2020. The release dropped “Core” from the product’s public-facing name; “Core” remains a technical edition designation.

What is the difference between PowerShell 7 and Windows PowerShell 5.1?

PowerShell 7 is a newer, cross-platform version. Windows PowerShell 5.1 is the older Windows-focused version. Installing PowerShell 7 does not remove 5.1: Microsoft installs it in a separate directory, and you can keep both available.

Will Windows PowerShell scripts and modules work in PowerShell 7?

Many Windows PowerShell modules work in PowerShell 7, but compatibility is not universal. Some Windows-only modules still require 5.1, and Microsoft documents a compatibility option for certain modules. A script that directly calls .NET methods may also behave differently because the two editions use different .NET runtimes.

Before switching a workflow to PowerShell 7, check every module it depends on and test scripts that call .NET directly. If a required module only works in 5.1, keep that edition available or investigate Microsoft’s compatibility option for the module.

How do you install PowerShell 7 on Windows?

Microsoft recommends WinGet for Windows client installations. Its installation guidance also lists MSI, MSIX, ZIP, and .NET Global Tool packages for other deployment needs. Choose the method that fits how you manage software; the package options are not interchangeable in every deployment context.

When Microsoft Learn’s installation page was checked on October 8, 2026, it displayed PowerShell 7.6.6 as the stable release and 7.7.0 as preview packages. Those version numbers and package availability can change, so check Microsoft’s installation page for the current release before installing.
