Destroying the lich’s body may only delay it: in the D&D 3.5 rules, it returns in 1d10 days if its phylactery survives. To end the threat, adventurers must find and destroy the vessel, whose destruction conditions can vary. In a fight, a classic fifth-edition lich also has tactical vulnerabilities, but its spellcasting makes it dangerous. These are D&D rules, not a universal rule for every fantasy lich.
Why the phylactery matters more than the body
A phylactery is the object that anchors a lich’s continued existence. The D&D 3.5 System Reference Document describes it as the container for the lich’s life force and calls its destruction the sure way to get rid of the lich. If the lich’s body is destroyed while the phylactery remains intact, it reappears after 1d10 days. That interval is a 3.5 game rule, not a real-world measure or a rule to apply automatically to other editions.
The vessel does not have to look like one standard prop. The 3.5 SRD gives a sealed metal box with inscribed parchment as a common form, but also allows objects such as rings and amulets. In fifth-edition discussion, D&D Beyond uses the term “spirit jar” and describes containers, talismans, and gemstones as possible forms. The appearance alone may not reveal the object’s significance.
How to defeat a lich for good
Think of the task as two linked problems: overcome the lich’s current body, then deal with the object that lets it endure or return. Winning the encounter is not necessarily the same as removing the long-term threat.

- Survive the encounter and defeat the lich’s body. This stops its immediate attack, but in the cited 3.5 rules it does not prevent a return while the phylactery remains intact.
- Find the phylactery or spirit jar. Its form can vary, so identifying it may require investigation rather than simply searching for a box.
- Learn the vessel’s destruction condition. Do not assume ordinary damage, a particular weapon, or one damage type will work in every fifth-edition case.
- Meet that condition and destroy the vessel. The relevant rule or adventure determines what is required for that lich.
D&D Beyond’s fifth-edition discussion gives adventure-specific examples of special requirements: Ezzat’s vessel has a demanding condition, while Exethanter’s is vulnerable to radiant damage. Those examples illustrate variation; they are not a universal rule for all spirit jars.
What weaknesses matter in a direct fight?
The classic fifth-edition Monster Manual lich has tactical weaknesses separate from its phylactery. D&D Beyond’s analysis describes its defenses as comparatively weak for its level and notes its 30-foot walking speed and lack of a prepared fly spell as mobility limits in the version discussed. These observations concern that article’s assumptions and version, not every lich stat block.

Those limitations do not make a lich an easy opponent. Its spellcasting is its greatest asset, so a party that focuses only on its defenses or movement can still be overwhelmed. Combat weaknesses may help the group survive and win the encounter; they do not replace dealing with the vessel if the goal is to prevent the lich’s return.

Pathfinder’s similar mechanism is not a reason to import its timing into a D&D campaign, or vice versa. Use the rules for the system and edition being played; a game mechanic also cannot establish how liches work in unrelated fantasy settings.
