What Is the Best Pokémon for Koga in FireRed?

A strong Psychic move is the most reliable broad counter to Koga’s Poison-type FireRed team—but watch for Toxic, Levitate, healing, and Selfdestruct.

Kadabra—or another Pokémon with a strong Psychic-type move—is the most practical counter for Koga in Pokémon FireRed. His team is entirely Poison-type, so Psychic attacks are useful across the matchup. It is not a guaranteed solo win: your Pokémon’s level and durability, its move’s power, and Koga’s healing items all matter.

Why Psychic moves are the best general answer

Koga is the Fuchsia City Gym Leader and is typically the fifth Gym Leader you face in FireRed. His Poison-type roster makes Psychic damage a reliable way to threaten every member of his team. Kadabra is a straightforward choice if you have one and it knows a strong Psychic move; another Pokémon that can use a comparably strong Psychic attack can fill the same role.

Choose a Pokémon that can do more than hit hard. Koga’s attacks and status effects can punish a fragile Pokémon, so consider whether your candidate can survive a hit and keep attacking rather than relying on a quick knockout.

Koga’s FireRed team and what to expect

Pokémon Level Battle detail
Koffing 37 Has Levitate and can use Selfdestruct.
Muk 39 Has Sticky Hold; it is the one member of Koga’s roster vulnerable to Ground moves.
Koffing 37 Has Levitate and can use Selfdestruct.
Weezing 43 Has Levitate and can use Selfdestruct.

The team also carries moves including Toxic, Sludge, SmokeScreen, Minimize, and Acid Armor. Koga has two Hyper Potions and one Full Heal, so a super-effective hit may not finish the fight before he can recover a Pokémon.

Why Ground moves are not enough

Ground attacks are a tempting choice against a Poison specialist, but they do not work against Koga’s two Koffing or his Weezing: all three have Levitate. Muk is the exception and can be hit by Ground moves. A Ground-focused plan therefore needs another attack or teammate for the Levitate users; Psychic moves offer broader coverage against the full roster.

How to prepare for the battle

  • Bring a sturdy Psychic attacker. A Pokémon that can withstand damage is safer than a fragile one that depends on striking first.
  • Keep a poison cure available. Toxic can make a drawn-out fight increasingly costly, so avoid slow setup while you are poisoned.
  • Respect Selfdestruct. Koffing and Weezing can use it, making an exposed, low-health attacker a risk if it cannot finish them promptly.
  • Plan for healing. Koga’s two Hyper Potions and Full Heal mean you may need to sustain pressure rather than expect one strong hit to settle the battle.

Defeating Koga earns the Soul Badge and TM06 Toxic.
