What Is the Best Profession for a Hunter in WoW: The Burning Crusade?

Leatherworking and Engineering suit most TBC Hunters, but group needs, phase, and melee-weaving can make other professions worthwhile.

For most Hunters in The Burning Crusade, Leatherworking and Engineering are the strongest all-round profession pairing. Leatherworking is especially valuable early for Hunter gear and group drums; Engineering adds useful damage and utility tools. The best choice can change with your realm’s ruleset and phase, your group’s needs, and whether you melee-weave.

Why Leatherworking and Engineering are the default pairing

A TBC Classic professions overview recommends Leatherworking and Engineering for Hunters, while a separate guide focused on The Burning Crusade Anniversary adds phase- and playstyle-specific alternatives. These are recommendations, not a measured ranking: the guides do not provide a numerical comparison of Hunter damage by profession. Check which ruleset and phase your realm is using before treating Anniversary phase timing as universal.

Leatherworking: early gear and group support

Leatherworking is a strong early choice because Hunters can use its crafted gear, and Leatherworkers can craft and use drums that provide group buffs. The Anniversary Hunter guide highlights the Primal Intent set as early best-in-slot gear and emphasizes drums for groups that benefit from them. How much the drums help you personally depends on your group’s needs; they are not automatically a unique contribution in every party or raid.

Engineering: tools for damage and utility

Engineering is a natural complement to Leatherworking if you want a second profession with combat tools. The TBC overview points to explosives, goggles, trinkets, guns, and scopes as reasons it suits DPS classes, especially Hunters. The Anniversary guide specifically calls out the Gnomish Battle Chicken, whose Battle Squawk haste effect benefits pets and melee-weaving, as well as Sapper Charges for area damage.

When another profession makes more sense

Blacksmithing for melee-weaving

Blacksmithing is a specialized option rather than a general Hunter recommendation. The Anniversary guide identifies Mooncleaver as the reason to consider it, with the value depending on whether you perform melee-weaving correctly. Choose it if you intend to use that playstyle and want the weapon benefit; otherwise, its case is less compelling than the standard pairing.

Enchanting as a later-phase alternative

The Anniversary-specific guide recommends considering Enchanting from Phase 3 because it grants access to the profession-exclusive Enchant Ring – Stats. That makes it a possible alternative when you prefer a direct character bonus over another profession’s crafting or utility. Confirm your realm’s phase schedule before relying on that timing.

Jewelcrafting and gathering professions

Jewelcrafting can suit a Hunter focused on crafting or the in-game economy, but the available guides do not identify it as the general top combat profession. The Burning Crusade introduced Jewelcrafting alongside socketed equipment and gem customization, as described in Blizzard’s World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade Manual.

Gathering professions can support a crafting choice: Skinning supplies leather and scales for Leatherworking, while Mining can supply materials for Engineering or Jewelcrafting. The trade-off is that a gathering profession does not provide the same second crafting profession’s direct character or group benefit.

Choose based on your phase, group, and playstyle

  • Early gear: Favor Leatherworking if its Hunter gear is useful for your current phase.
  • Group contribution: Consider Leatherworking when your party or raid benefits from your access to drums.
  • Broad combat utility: Pair Leatherworking with Engineering for tools such as explosives and other Hunter-relevant items.
  • Melee-weaving: Consider Blacksmithing only if you plan to use the playstyle and want Mooncleaver.
  • Later-phase personal bonus: On the Anniversary schedule described by the guide, Enchanting becomes an option from Phase 3 for Enchant Ring – Stats.
  • Material gathering or crafting goals: Skinning, Mining, or Jewelcrafting can fit an economy-focused character, even if they are not the leading general combat picks.

Recommendation

Start with Leatherworking and Engineering if you want a broadly useful Hunter setup. Prioritize Leatherworking for early gear and drums when your group values them; keep Engineering for its distinct utility and damage tools. Reconsider Blacksmithing for a deliberate melee-weaving build or Enchanting for the cited Anniversary Phase 3 ring enchant, and verify phase availability on your realm.
