Pick the expansion whose story and setting you want to play. If your goal is to follow Blizzard’s current new-player story route rather than choose an older campaign, its February 2026 guide points new players from Dragonflight into The War Within.
Which Chromie timeline should you choose?
Choose based on the experience you want, not an unsupported speed ranking. Chromie Time—called “Timewalking Campaigns” in Blizzard’s guides—lets eligible characters select an expansion campaign to play while leveling. Blizzard’s campaign guide describes the choice as a way to revisit an expansion’s story and content.
- Want a particular world or story? Select the expansion that interests you. The choice is about which campaign you want to experience.
- Want Blizzard’s current new-player route? Blizzard’s starter guide, published February 25, 2026, describes starting in Exile’s Reach, following Dragonflight through level 70, then continuing into The War Within to level 80. This is a current-story route, not evidence that Dragonflight is the fastest Chromie Time option.
- Want older campaign content? Choose the expansion you would like to explore. The official guidance presents older campaign selection as a player choice.

Is any Chromie timeline the fastest for leveling?
The official sources available here do not compare campaign quest density, experience rates, or completion times. They therefore do not establish a fastest timeline. A claim that one expansion levels faster would need current, comparable evidence; the fact that campaigns scale to a character is not enough to prove a speed advantage.

If speed is your only criterion, there is no supported official ranking to use. Choose by preference, or compare current in-game experience for yourself rather than treating an unverified community ranking as a guaranteed result.
What happens when you choose a timeline?
Blizzard’s November 25, 2020 guide says that selecting a past expansion scales that campaign to your character and connects Dungeon Finder to dungeons associated with the selected timeline. Those details come from a guide published in 2020, so treat them as historical official guidance rather than a guarantee that every interface detail is unchanged today.

The feature is presented as a way to choose campaign content, not as a permanent character commitment. Blizzard’s guide says you can speak with Chromie to choose another expansion timeline or return to the present. Because that switching description is also from 2020, check the current in-game options if the interface differs.

Blizzard’s July 11, 2023 Dragonflight: Fractures in Time Content Update Notes raised Chromie Time’s maximum level to 61 in that update. That is a dated patch-note fact, not confirmation of the live cutoff in October 2026. Blizzard’s February 2026 starter guide describes the current new-player story route but does not state the current Chromie Time exit or switching level, so the current limit cannot be established from these sources.
