There is no single best damage status in Warframe. The right choice depends on what you are shooting. Viral is a strong general-purpose pick when your goal is to boost damage to health, Magnetic is built for shields, Corrosive is the tool for armor, and Heat and Slash add damage over time. Faction weaknesses can override all of these, so the practical answer is to match the status to the target in front of you rather than to pick one status for every weapon.
What each status is designed to do
Digital Extremes’ Warframe Revised notes for Update 27.2.2 (March 24, 2020) set out how status effects scale. The notes describe the goal of the rework in plain terms: “Our goal is to give Status into the Arsenals in a new light for all Primary, Secondary, and Melee weapons.” The same notes close the section with a short instruction that is still the best summary of the decision: “Know your enemy.” (Update 27.2.2 notes, Digital Extremes)
| Status | Main job | First effect | Stacking and cap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Viral | Boosts damage to health | +100% health damage | +25% per subsequent effect, up to +325% |
| Magnetic | Boosts damage to shields and stops shield regeneration | +100% shield damage | +25% per subsequent effect, up to +325%; affected enemies cannot regenerate shields |
| Corrosive | Strips armor | Strips 26% armor | +6% per subsequent effect, up to 80% armor stripped |
| Radiation | Turns enemies against allies | Enemy deals 100% damage to allies | Rises with subsequent effects to a 550% cap |
| Heat | Damage over time | Not stated in the cited notes | Not stated in the cited notes |
| Slash | Damage over time | Not stated in the cited notes | Not stated in the cited notes |
All figures in the table come from the 2020 rework notes. They are game-mechanic values, not comparative test results, so they tell you what each status does, not which one wins overall.
Match the status to the enemy’s defense
Enemies usually present one of three defenses, and each status targets a different one. Choosing well starts with identifying which layer you need to get through.

- Health: Viral is the broad choice here. Its bonus applies directly to health damage.
- Shields: Magnetic adds shield damage and prevents shield regeneration, which matters most when shields keep recovering between your hits.
- Armor: Corrosive is the status designed to strip armor, so it is the logical pick when armor is blocking your damage.
- Damage over time: Heat and Slash inflict damage over time. They are typically paired with a separate status for the direct effect, rather than replacing it.
A status that helps against health is not automatically the best answer for a shielded or armored target. That is the core reason no single status can be the universal best.
Faction weaknesses can change the answer
The Warframe.today damage guide, last updated September 30, 2026, lists faction weaknesses that grant +50% damage for the listed damage types. This is a secondary guide’s table rather than an official patch-note figure, so use it as orientation and check the faction details in-game before relying on it.
Rank #2
| Faction | Listed weak damage types (per the guide) |
|---|---|
| Grineer | Impact, Corrosive |
| Corpus | Puncture, Magnetic |
| Infested | Slash, Heat |
The guide also lists weaknesses for other factions; check its full table for those. When a listed type matches the faction you are fighting, it can outweigh a generic status choice.

A practical decision order
- Identify the target’s main defense: health, shields, or armor.
- Check the enemy faction against its listed weak damage types. A matching type can take priority over the generic choice.
- Check the star-chart node’s suggested damage. The current guide recommends this as a starting point.
- Choose the status that matches the defense. Add Heat or Slash as a damage-over-time option when you need sustained damage.
- Confirm exact values against the official patch notes before you rely on them, because guides can lag behind patches.
Current patch context
Digital Extremes’ Update 44: Iceblade of Narin, published September 23, 2026, changes Banshee. Sound Quake now applies Blast status effects, and Gaseous Quake deals additional Gas damage and status effects. The notes do not announce a general overhaul of the status system. The official patch index lists Update 44.1.0 dated October 7, 2026. (Update 44 notes, Digital Extremes)
The Warframe.today guide says it was reviewed against Update 44. Its recommendations may change with future patches, so treat it as a guide to approach rather than a fixed value sheet.

What is not established
- No current, authoritative comparative study ranks all status effects by overall effectiveness. The official notes and the current guide do not present performance testing that proves one status always wins.
- The official figures cover the mechanics of each status, not how each one performs on every weapon. A status that suits one weapon may not suit another.
- No first-hand weapon testing is claimed here.
