It depends on your Minecraft edition, farm layout, and where you stand while waiting for creepers to spawn. In Bedrock Edition, start with the lowest simulation distance that keeps the farm’s spawning platforms active; the documented default is 4 chunks. Java Edition has no source-supported universal best setting, and Bedrock’s numeric spawn-range reference should not be applied to it.
What simulation distance does to a creeper farm
Simulation distance determines how far from the player gameplay updates are processed; render distance determines how far the game draws the world. A farm can be visible without its spawning platforms being within the active simulation area. Microsoft’s Bedrock simulation-distance guide includes mob spawning among the mechanics affected by simulation distance and states that simulation distance cannot exceed render distance.

For a creeper farm, the practical check is whether the spawning platforms fall within the applicable simulated area from your intended AFK position. If they do not, the farm may not work as intended. The exact range depends on edition and game version, so do not treat one edition’s range as a cross-edition rule.
Bedrock Edition: start at 4 chunks, then check your layout
Microsoft’s 2025 guide documents 4 chunks as Bedrock’s default simulation distance and describes settings up to 12 chunks, with the available maximum depending on the device. It also notes that server configuration can affect the available setting. The guide warns that simulation distance has a higher performance cost than render distance.

At Bedrock simulation distance 4, a published comparison reference gives a mob-spawning range of 24–44 blocks from the player. Treat that as edition- and version-specific reference information, not a guarantee for every current world or server; verify the relevant game version and configuration before relying on it for a build.
Choose the smallest available distance that keeps the farm’s spawning platforms active from your AFK spot. Increase it only if the layout needs more range and the device or server can handle the added processing. This is a practical application of the documented mechanics, not a tested creeper-farm rate recommendation: no source here establishes that a particular setting produces a specific number of creepers or improves output by a measurable amount.

Mojang’s Java announcement says that entities, blocks, and fluids are not updated outside simulation distance. Its stated purpose includes allowing higher render distance with less CPU load. The announcement does not provide a creeper-specific optimal setting or compare farm rates across settings.
For Java, use the same layout-first reasoning: identify the simulation-distance setting in your world or server, then ensure the farm’s spawning platforms are within the active area from the player’s position. Do not use Bedrock’s 24–44-block reference as Java guidance.

How to choose a setting for your build
- Confirm the edition and version. Identify whether you are playing Bedrock or Java, and check the relevant game version. Their mechanics and documented numeric references are not interchangeable.
- Find the intended AFK position. Measure from where the player will actually wait to the farm’s spawning platforms, not just to the nearest wall or visible part of the build.
- Check the world or server limit. Use a setting permitted by the device and server configuration. A world may not offer the maximum described in general Bedrock guidance.
- Start with the lowest setting that covers the relevant platforms. If the farm is outside the active area, adjust the AFK position or raise the setting as needed.
- Watch performance while adjusting. Higher simulation distance costs more performance; the largest selectable value is not automatically the best choice for your setup.
Why there is no single best number
The appropriate value changes with edition, game version, farm geometry, AFK position, server limits, and device performance. Official documentation explains what simulation distance affects, but it does not establish one optimal creeper-farm setting or a rate advantage for any particular number. A precise recommendation requires those setup details, so a universal number would be misleading.
