Dragon is a weapon element in Monster Hunter Wilds: it adds Dragon elemental damage when your attacks hit. How useful it is depends on the monster’s resistance and the body part you strike, so it is not a universal bonus against every target. Check the hunt’s Monster Field Guide entry before choosing a Dragon weapon.
What Dragon element does
A Dragon-element weapon deals its listed elemental damage as part of its attacks. The monster’s resistance to Dragon and the part struck affect the result. The community-maintained Monster Hunter Wilds API Reference says its elemental-resistance data roughly corresponds to weaknesses shown in the in-game Monster Field Guide; use the Guide to assess a specific matchup.
Dragon is an element, not a special effect that automatically counters all monsters associated with dragons. A monster’s weakness can vary by element and body part. The official Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate manual describes the broader series principle of matching weapon elements to a monster’s weakness, but it covers a different game and is franchise context, not Wilds-specific documentation.
Dragon element versus Dragonblight
Dragon element belongs to your weapon. Dragonblight is a negative status that can affect your hunter. While Dragonblight is active, it can suppress elemental weapon effects; the Wilds-specific explanation is summarized in Game8’s Monster Hunter Wilds guide.

Capcom’s Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak manual likewise describes Dragonblight as nullifying weapon elemental and ailment effects. That supports the franchise terminology, but it is not an official Wilds manual and should not be taken as proof of identical details in every game.
How to choose a Dragon weapon
- Check the Monster Field Guide. Look at the monster’s elemental weaknesses and, where available, the relevant body-part information. The API reference describes its resistance data as roughly corresponding to the in-game Guide.
- Compare the weapon with your target and build. Consider the monster’s resistance on the part you expect to hit, the weapon’s raw attack and other useful stats, and the attacks your build uses.
- Do not assume Dragon is always best. A Dragon weapon is only an informed choice when the matchup and your weapon/build support it; the available evidence does not establish a universal Dragon-versus-raw recommendation.
What does a Dragon number such as 140 mean?
The number is a displayed weapon element value, but it is not enough by itself to tell you the exact elemental damage dealt by each hit. That result depends on the attack and the monster’s hitzone, and an authoritative Wilds-specific calculation for converting a displayed value such as Dragon 140 into damage per hit is not established here. Treat the value as one factor for comparing weapons, not as a guaranteed per-hit damage figure.

Use the in-game Monster Field Guide entry for the monster you plan to hunt, then consider the part you intend to attack. The API reference can be a convenient secondary data source, but it is community-maintained; verify specific numerical resistance values against current in-game information when precision matters.
