In Destiny 2, Unravel spreads a Strand effect to nearby enemies, while Sever reduces an affected enemy’s outgoing damage. In short: Unravel helps spread pressure; Sever makes a target less threatening.
How Unravel works
When you attack an unraveled enemy, threads burst from it and attack nearby targets. Any target struck by those threads also becomes unraveled, allowing the effect to spread through nearby enemies. Bungie describes this behavior in its Inside Strand explainer.
How Sever works
Sever weakens an enemy’s ability to affect the material world, reducing its damage output. Its practical benefit is defensive: a severed enemy deals less outgoing damage, according to Bungie’s Inside Strand explainer.
Sever’s documented damage reduction
Bungie’s 2023 Season 22 abilities preview stated that Sever reduced PvE combatants’ outgoing damage by 40%, up from 30%. Those percentages describe the change documented in that preview; they should not be treated as a confirmed current value without checking newer balance updates. The preview does not establish a complete current PvE-versus-PvP comparison for Sever and Unravel.
