There is no single best two-handed weapon in The Elder Scrolls Online that the available sources support. The right choice depends on the character’s build, the content being played, and which stats that build relies on. The most detailed comparison available is a player discussion of a solo Dragonknight PvE build from June 2025, and it shows how much the answer shifts with the numbers. It does not produce a ranking that applies to everyone.
Why no two-handed weapon wins for every character
A weapon label on its own tells you little. ESO support explains that each weapon type provides different core abilities, including light attacks, heavy attacks, and blocks (The Elder Scrolls Online Support, “What weapon types are in the game, and what can they do?”). The value of a two-handed weapon therefore comes from how those abilities interact with your skills, sets, and stats, so the question is really about the whole build.
What the 2025 battle axe, greatsword, and maul comparison shows
The most-cited head-to-head is an Elder Scrolls Online Forums thread titled “2h battle axe vs greatsword,” posted June 27–28, 2025 (ESO Forums, “2h battle axe vs greatsword”). The poster’s build is a solo PvE Dragonknight. Replies weigh the two weapons against each other and then bring in a maul once critical chance and penetration are part of the discussion.
Battle axe
In the thread’s example, a higher critical chance can shift the choice toward axes. That conclusion depends on the critical chance the build actually has, so it does not transfer to a build with different critical stats.
#1 Best Overall
Greatsword
The greatsword is the baseline the thread measures the battle axe against. The debate turns on the critical chance, critical damage, and weapon damage the build posts, not on a fixed property of the greatsword itself.
Maul
A reply suggests a two-handed mace or maul for that specific build because it could restore some penetration. This is one player’s reasoning for one build. It is not evidence that mauls are generally the strongest option.
Rank #2
The thread is player advice built on stated assumptions. It is not an official balance statement, and it is not controlled testing of the weapons, so treat its conclusions as a method to copy rather than a verdict to adopt.
How to decide for your own build
Work through these factors in order. The table lists what to check and how the 2025 thread used each one.

|---|---|---|
| Content and mode | Whether the character is in solo PvE, group PvE, or PvP | Limited to solo PvE; the thread does not cover other modes |
| Critical chance | Your current critical chance from your character stats | Its level was a deciding factor; a higher value favored axes in that example |
| Critical damage | Your current critical damage | Weighed alongside critical chance |
| Penetration | Whether the build is short on penetration and whether a weapon can restore it | A mace or maul was suggested because it could restore some penetration |
| Weapon damage bonuses | Bonuses from other gear, skills, or sets that change weapon damage | Noted as something that can change the comparison |
Once you have those numbers, compare the candidate weapons by running the same build with each one and checking which result fits your goal. Do not carry a result from one build to another without repeating the comparison.
Set accounting matters for two-handed weapons
Two-handed weapons count differently from one-handed weapons when you track gear set bonuses. Bethesda’s support article states: “One handed weapons count as 1 bonus, while two-handed weapons count as 2” (Bethesda Support, “Gear Set Bonuses”).
Rank #4
- The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Official Game Guide
The same guidance says that a five-piece bonus completed across weapons is active only on the weapons bar where those weapons are equipped. If you build a weapon-based set on one bar, do not assume the bonus is active on the other bar.

The official ESO guide index lists “Community Guides—Update 51 Special” dated 09/25/2026 and “Community Guides—August 2026” dated 08/13/2026 (The Elder Scrolls Online, “Guides”). Those listings confirm that current community guides exist. They do not establish which two-handed weapon is best.

The weapon comparison above dates from June 2025, more than a year before this article. Patch changes can alter the stats a build depends on, so check whether a comparison predates the current patch before using its result. For a specific current build, the most reliable approach is to establish the mode, the stats, and the patch, then compare the weapons on that build yourself.
No official statement or controlled test names a universal best two-handed weapon for PvE or PvP.
