1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe default Roblox Humanoid.WalkSpeed is 16 studs per second. For player characters, the starting value comes from StarterPlayer.CharacterWalkSpeed, which also defaults to 16. An individual Roblox experience can change either setting.
What does WalkSpeed measure?
Humanoid.WalkSpeed describes how quickly a Humanoid can walk, measured in studs per second. Roblox’s Humanoid API reference says the default value corresponds to moving 16 studs in any direction each second.
Where does a player character’s starting speed come from?
StarterPlayer.CharacterWalkSpeed sets the starting WalkSpeed for player characters. Its documented default is 16, according to the StarterPlayer API reference.
Changing CharacterWalkSpeed affects characters spawned afterward. A character that is already in the game must respawn before it receives the changed starting value. To affect an existing character without waiting for a respawn, a script can change that character’s Humanoid directly.

How can a developer change WalkSpeed?
Set the starting speed for future player characters
In Roblox Studio, change StarterPlayer.CharacterWalkSpeed to the desired value. The new value is used when player characters spawn; it does not by itself update characters already spawned.
Change a particular Humanoid with a script
Assign a new number to the character’s Humanoid.WalkSpeed. Roblox’s speed-boost tutorial demonstrates changing the property in a script.

Does every Roblox game use the default?
No. Sixteen is the documented standard default, not a guarantee about every character in every experience. Developers can configure the starting value or change a Humanoid’s speed during gameplay, so the effective speed may differ from 16.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Developer security note
Roblox warns that WalkSpeed can be modified locally. It should not be treated as a security boundary or used alone to prevent movement. Roblox’s network ownership and movement-validation guidance discusses WalkSpeed manipulation as one way exploiters may alter movement. Developers should validate movement on the server rather than rely solely on the client-reported speed.
