Canceling can mean the same thing, or it can mean ending the subscription immediately with a refund if your account is eligible. Which one you get depends on the option shown in your Microsoft account, not on the word you choose.
What turning off recurring billing does
Recurring billing is the setting that renews a subscription automatically, at the regular price and on the interval you originally selected. Microsoft’s recurring-billing guidance for the UK describes it this way: “When you purchase a Microsoft recurring billing subscription, it automatically renews at the regular price and interval you selected and continues until you cancel it.” Turning that setting off means the subscription will not renew, so no further automatic charge is taken.
Turning off renewal does not end the subscription early. You keep access for the prepaid period, and the subscription expires on the date shown in your Microsoft account.
What “canceling” can mean
The word “cancel” is used loosely. In some cases the cancellation flow only stops renewal, which behaves like turning off recurring billing. In other cases it offers a separate choice to end the subscription immediately with a refund. Microsoft’s refund guidance says eligibility depends on timing, subscription type, and purchase country, so an immediate-refund option may not appear for every account.

If you are not eligible for an immediate refund, Microsoft says the subscription stops at the end of the current billing period. That means a cancellation without a refund works the same way, in practice, as turning off recurring billing.

The practical rule is simple: if you only want to avoid paying again, either route works. If you want to stop using the subscription now and get money back, you must look for an immediate-end option and check whether your account qualifies.

Turning off renewal on a Microsoft account
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that bought the Xbox subscription. Using a different account can make the subscription appear to be missing.
- Open Services & subscriptions.
- Select the subscription and choose Manage.
- Follow the controls shown to cancel or turn off recurring billing. The exact label depends on the subscription and its status.
- Read the expiry date and any refund message before you confirm.
Turning off renewal on an Xbox console
- Go to Settings > Account > Subscriptions.
- Select the subscription.
- Choose Cancel or Turn off recurring billing, whichever appears.
- Check the date the subscription will end and confirm.
How to tell whether renewal is already off
Microsoft Support says that if your account shows “Turn on recurring billing” where a Manage link would normally be, the subscription is already set to expire on the date shown, and you will not be charged automatically after that date. You do not need to take any further action to prevent another charge.
When another company bills the subscription
If the subscription was bought through a third-party store, the store controls billing. Microsoft directs purchasers who paid through the Apple App Store or Google Play to contact those stores for cancellation or refunds. Changing settings in your Microsoft account will not stop a charge that the app store processes.

Common problems
- The subscription is not listed. Check that you are signed in with the purchasing account, and check whether the purchase was made through an app store.
- There is no Manage link. Look for “Turn on recurring billing.” If it is there, renewal is already off.
- You expected an immediate end but the flow only shows an expiry date. Your account is not offered an immediate-end option. Access continues to the displayed date.
- You want a refund but none is offered. Refund eligibility depends on timing, subscription type, and purchase country. Xbox has separate refund information, and the cancellation screen states whether your subscription qualifies.
Microsoft’s account pages and cancellation flow change over time, and the wording and refund rules can differ by country and by Xbox subscription. The screen in front of you, and the expiry date it shows, are the reliable guide for your own account.
