The official Calamity Mod Wiki’s Hardmode class setup guide offers a menu of viable options: four weapons (B-GSS: Nidhogg, Dead Sun’s Wind, Plague Tainted SMG with Bubonic Rounds, and Vortexpopper), three core mage armors (Hydrothermic, Astral, and Reaver), and a range of accessories and potions. The guide states that its order does not rank power and that players can adapt the setup. The practical answer is to pick one weapon and one armor from that menu, then choose accessories based on whether your fight needs damage, survivability, mobility, or a specific effect.
Where this stage sits in progression
“Pre-Moon Lord” is a progression point, not an item tier. The official guide places this stage after defeating the Lunatic Cultist. At that point the player has the Ancient Manipulator, can collect materials from the Lunar Events, and is preparing for Moon Lord. The stage text also mentions Astrum Deus and Astral Bars as part of the progression. If you have not yet defeated the Lunatic Cultist, this guide describes a stage you have not reached, and the gear it lists may not be obtainable yet.
The guide’s stated baseline is Expert difficulty with Revengeance Mode. It was last updated for version 2.1.2 and warns that some advice may not apply to the current patch. Treat that baseline as the starting assumption, not a universal rule. A June 2026 r/CalamityMod discussion asking this same question shows that players already distinguish between base Calamity and Infernum when answering it, so state your mode before comparing setups.
Weapons: four options, no ranking
The guide lists four pre-Moon Lord mage weapons. It does not order them by strength and does not provide a controlled comparison, so none of them should be treated as the tested winner.

- Plague Tainted SMG. The guide pairs it with Bubonic Rounds.

Choose the weapon that matches how you aim and how you handle the encounter. A weapon you can control consistently will usually outperform a theoretically stronger one you struggle to land.
Armor: Hydrothermic, Astral, or Reaver
The stage’s mage armor choices are Hydrothermic, Astral, and Reaver. The guide also lists Lunic Corps and Plague Reaper armor. Plague Reaper is marked as difficult and risky to use, so it is not a default recommendation for a first attempt at this stage.

Do not confuse these with earlier armor. The separate armor progression guide describes Brimflame as a glass-cannon option and Spectre as offering survivability and damage in earlier post-Plantera progression. Those are different stages, and their descriptions do not transfer to the pre-Moon Lord list.
Accessories: match the list to your priority
The guide groups accessories by purpose. You will not have slots for all of them, so pick according to the problem you are solving.

Potions and buffs
The guide lists a menu of consumables rather than a required kit:
- Healing and mana: Super Healing Potions and Super Mana Potions.
- Survival and recovery: Plenty Satisfied, Endurance, Ironskin, Lifeforce, and Regeneration Potions.
- Offensive mage buffs: Clairvoyance, Magic Power, and Mana Regeneration.
- Aggression and mobility: Rage and Wrath Potions, and Soaring and Swiftness Potions.
Not every buff is needed for every encounter. Pick the ones that cover the damage or survival gap you actually have.

How to choose your setup
Work through these questions in order:
- Confirm your stage. Have you defeated the Lunatic Cultist and do you have the Ancient Manipulator? If not, you are earlier than this guide.
- Pick the weapon you control best. Choose among the four listed weapons based on your aim and encounter style.
- Pick armor for your health pool. Choose Hydrothermic, Astral, or Reaver. Avoid Plague Reaper on a first pass unless you are comfortable with its listed risk.
- Fill accessory slots by problem. If you are short on damage, look at the damage group. If you keep dying, look at the defensive group. If you need general coverage, start with Celestial Shell or The Absorber.
- Add potions and buffs last. Use the healing, mana, and offensive buffs that cover what the first four steps leave open.
Version and limits of this guidance
The guide was last updated for version 2.1.2, and it says it may not reflect the current patch. The wiki’s release listing shows a newer version, 2026.4.3.0. That means the item names and stage placement may still be accurate, but individual gear recommendations have not been confirmed against the newer release. Before relying on any detail, check the item’s own page on the Calamity Mod Wiki.
No comparative damage, survivability, or testing statistics are published for these options in the sources. The guide does not claim its listed sets were measured against each other. Any ranking you see presented as definitive should be checked for the testing behind it.

Bottom line for a first pre-Moon Lord setup
A reasonable starting point is one of the four listed weapons, Hydrothermic, Astral, or Reaver armor, Celestial Shell or The Absorber for general coverage, and the healing and mana potions. Swap accessories toward damage or defense once you know which problem limits you. Verify item details on the official wiki before committing to a build.
