The maximum native battle size in Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord is 1,000 troops spawned at once. Custom Battle can support a total of 2,000 units, but that does not put all 2,000 on the battlefield simultaneously.
What does Bannerlord’s battle-size limit mean?
The Battle Size gameplay setting controls how many troops are spawned in the battle at the same time. TaleWorlds’ January 2022 update says the spawned troop count is governed by this setting; a TaleWorlds community moderator later clarified that its simultaneous limit is up to 1,000 soldiers. TaleWorlds’ update and the moderator’s clarification distinguish that active battlefield count from the total units a Custom Battle can support.
A larger force may still take part as the battle progresses, with reinforcements entering over time. So the 1,000 limit is not necessarily the total size of an army involved in a prolonged encounter; it is the maximum number spawned simultaneously under the native setting.
Why does Custom Battle mention 2,000 units?
The 2,000 figure refers to Custom Battle’s total unit capacity, not a simultaneous spawn count. TaleWorlds described the increased capacity as a way to explore battle changes, then specified that the Battle Size setting governs how many troops spawn. The moderator’s explanation is explicit: up to 2,000 units are supported for a battle, but not all at once.

Can mods raise the limit?
Community mods can provide a configurable battle-size tweak. The BannerlordTweaks project warns that values above 1,000 can cause performance degradation and crashes. That is mod-specific guidance, not an official game setting or a guarantee that a particular mod version will work with your installation. Check the mod’s current compatibility details before using it.
Does 800 characters at 60 FPS describe the current maximum?
No. TaleWorlds’ 2017 development blog described a then-current aim of “800 characters” at 60 FPS on high-end, current-generation gaming CPUs. That was a historical development target, not the present native cap and not a current performance benchmark. The 2017 developer blog does not establish a generally applicable modern FPS figure for a given battle size.
Is the cap different on PC, PlayStation, or Xbox?
The official sources cited here establish the setting-controlled limit but do not specify current platform-by-platform caps or whether console performance modes change the number. TaleWorlds’ July 2026 patch notes confirm continued updates, but the cited notes do not state a changed battle-size limit. Consult TaleWorlds’ news and patch notes for later changes rather than assuming platform parity or a different console cap.
