A lock beside a friend’s name in Fortnite most likely relates to party privacy: a locked party needs an invitation to join. Epic Games’ published help does not map every lock icon to a single meaning, though, so the exact icon you are seeing depends on where it appears. This guide explains the party privacy setting Epic documents, how to check it, and what to do when you cannot join or hear a friend.
What a party lock means
Epic’s support documentation links the lock to party privacy. On the Fortnite mobile app, Epic’s help page on party privacy describes tapping a lock on Party Hub to lock the party, so people cannot join without an invite. That page is older and localized, and it may reflect a legacy Party Hub layout, so the exact screen steps may not match your version of the game.
The underlying setting is called Party Joinability. Epic’s current Epic Parties FAQ defines it this way:
“Party Joinability controls whether your friends can drop into your party on their own, or whether they need an invite first.” (Epic Games Support, Epic Parties FAQ)
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
In practice, a lock indicates that the party is set to Invite Only. Any icon that does not appear in a party or privacy context should be checked before you assume it means the same thing.
Where the icon appears matters
Epic’s documentation confirms the lock as a party privacy control, but it does not confirm that every lock shown beside a friend’s name refers to that control. Before drawing a conclusion, note where the icon sits:

- In the Party Hub or a party tile: this placement fits the documented party privacy lock. Confirm the setting in the party controls before relying on it.
- Beside a microphone: this placement is more closely tied to voice than to joining. Epic treats voice and text as separate from joinability, so check voice settings as well (see below).
- In another menu: Epic’s sources do not map this placement to a meaning. Ask the friend where they see the icon, or compare it with a screenshot from the same screen.
Joinable and Invite Only compared
Party Joinability has two documented states. The table below uses only the values Epic states; where a value is not stated, it is marked as such.
| Question | Joinable | Invite Only |
|---|---|---|
| Can friends join directly? | Yes, friends can join on their own. | No. Friends need an invitation or must ask to join. |
| Default for accounts identified as under 18 and cabined accounts | Not the documented default for these accounts. | Starts as Invite Only, subject to available settings and restrictions (Epic Parties FAQ). |
| Who can change it? | Any party member can change the current party’s setting; a player who changes it also sets their own personal default after leaving (Epic support, party joinability article). | Same rule as Joinable. Changing it may be blocked by account or parental-control restrictions (Epic Fortnite support page). |
| Effect on voice and text | Not stated to change. Epic says voice and text communication depend on their own settings and may be limited by parental or platform controls. | |
Who can change the setting
A party lock is not necessarily set by the friend you are looking at. Epic says any party member can change the current party’s joinability, so a friend or another member may have switched a party to Invite Only. Changes apply to the party you are currently in. If you change the setting yourself, that choice also becomes your personal default after you leave the party.

What an Away status means
Away is a separate status that can appear alongside a friend’s name and is easy to confuse with a lock. According to Epic’s Epic Parties FAQ, an Away status can appear when Fortnite and Epic’s mobile apps are closed while social notifications are enabled. A friend who is Away can receive an invite, but cannot be joined directly.
Troubleshooting: you cannot join or hear a friend
- Check the party’s joinability. Open your friend’s or the current party’s profile or social controls and look for Joinable or Invite Only. If the setting is Invite Only, ask a party member for an invite or request to join.
- Check whether another member changed it. If the setting seems wrong for your preference, any party member may have changed it for the current party. Ask the party members before changing your own default.
- Check the friend’s status. If the friend is Away, send an invite rather than trying to join directly.
- Check voice and text settings. If the problem is that you cannot hear or message the friend, review the voice and text permissions. Epic’s labels for these settings include Everybody, Friends and connections, Friends Only, and Off.
- Check restrictions. Parental controls or platform settings can limit communication and some account settings. A party privacy lock alone does not explain a communication problem.
What the official sources do not settle
Epic’s documentation establishes what Joinable and Invite Only mean and how a party lock relates to party privacy. It does not identify the exact icon beside a friend’s name in every context, and it does not confirm that a lock beside a name always shows party privacy. If you cannot tell what the icon refers to, the most reliable step is to compare it with the party controls on your own screen or ask the friend to describe where it appears.
