What Lies in the Multiverse received favorable critic reviews, with reviewers often praising its reality-switching puzzles, humor, characters, and story. Scores vary by source and platform: Metacritic’s cited score is for Xbox One, while the OpenCritic summary appears on the Epic Games Store. The available criticism also points to a useful caveat: most puzzles may feel easy to players looking for a demanding challenge.
What critics scored What Lies in the Multiverse
| Source | Figure | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Metacritic | 85 Metascore | Six critic reviews on the Xbox One review page. All six are positive in the displayed sample, with no mixed or negative reviews. The listed reviews are dated March 3–28, 2022. |
| OpenCritic, displayed on the Epic Games Store | 80 top critic average; 86% Critics Recommend | Epic labels the rating “Strong” and attributes the summary to OpenCritic. This is a cross-platform summary displayed on the store page, not the Xbox One Metascore. |
| Steam player reviews | 91% positive from 517 reviews | A Steam user-review snapshot accessed October 8, 2026. It is not a critic score, and the live total and percentage may change. |
| PlayStation Store player ratings | 4.23 out of 5 from 69 ratings | A US PlayStation Store snapshot accessed October 8, 2026. These are player ratings, not critic reviews. |
These figures are not interchangeable: Metacritic’s 85 is tied to its Xbox One critic-review page, the OpenCritic figures are shown on Epic’s store listing, and the Steam and PlayStation numbers come from players. Treat each as a separate signal rather than a single universal score.

What reviewers praised
The selected reviews on Metacritic’s Xbox One page repeatedly connect the game’s writing and characters with its puzzle-platforming. Finger Guns rated it 90 and praised its writing and accessible, engaging platform-puzzling; TheXboxHub also gave it 90 and called it a refreshing experience. XboxAddict rated it 87, highlighting humorous dialogue, characters, and a satisfying narrative, while The Games Machine gave it 85 for its narrative and reality-switching puzzle concept.
Those excerpts suggest the game’s appeal is the combination: changing the level’s reality is not only a puzzle device but the basis for a story with a distinctive comic voice. The selected comments are from one platform-specific review page, so they should not be read as a complete survey of every critic.

Are the puzzles difficult?
One notable qualification comes from Gaming Nexus reviewer Russell Archey, whose review excerpt appears on the Epic Games Store page: “The puzzle-aspect of it is rather on the easy side for most of the game with nothing too complex, but where the game really shines is the story.” That makes What Lies in the Multiverse a better fit for players drawn to its narrative and world-switching idea than for those whose main priority is consistently complex puzzles.
The central mechanic still gives levels a clear logical and spatial dimension: switching between alternate versions of an area changes its physical layout and properties, opening or closing routes and changing how surfaces and obstacles behave. The official descriptions frame the tone as cartoonish comedy with more mature themes, including death, envy, and obsession.
What kind of game is it?
What Lies in the Multiverse is a story-driven 2D puzzle-platforming adventure released March 4, 2022. Steam credits Studio Voyager and IguanaBee as developers and Untold Tales and Doyoyo Games as publishers; Epic credits IguanaBee SpA. as developer and Untold Tales S.A. as publisher. The credited names differ by store listing.
Rank #2
For a sense of the critical enthusiasm, GamingTrend reviewer Richard Allen described it in an excerpt reproduced by Epic as “one of the most unique puzzle/platformers released in recent years.” That is a reviewer’s assessment, not a developer claim.
