Mojang’s official articles describe how many tropical-fish variants exist and where they appear, but they do not rank variants by how hard they are to find, and they do not publish per-variant spawn probabilities. Any answer that names one specific variant as definitively the rarest would go beyond what the official material supports.
What the official sources say about tropical fish
Tropical fish are the only fish in Minecraft with a large, named variety. The current official figure comes from Minecraft’s “Taking Inventory: Tropical fish” article by Duncan Geere, published June 27, 2025 by Minecraft / Mojang Studios. It states that there are 3,072 types of tropical fish. In the article’s own words: “There are cod. There are salmon. There are pufferfish. And then there are 3,072 different types of tropical fish.”
That article describes variety and gameplay. It does not say which type is rarest, and it does not give spawn odds for any individual type.
Why the variant count is not a rarity ranking
A large number of possible variants does not tell you how often each one appears. Minecraft’s official articles separate the number of possible appearances from the chances of finding any one of them. Two official articles give different totals, and the table below shows both with their dates and stated basis.

| Source | Date | Stated figure | Stated basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minecraft / Mojang Studios, “Taking Inventory: Bucket of Fish” (Duncan Geere) | March 26, 2020 | 3,584 variants | Every combination of 15 colours, six patterns, and two shapes |
| Minecraft / Mojang Studios, “Taking Inventory: Tropical fish” (Duncan Geere) | June 27, 2025 | 3,072 types | Not stated in the article |
The 2025 article is the current official count, so use 3,072 as the latest figure. The 2020 figure is older and should be cited with its date if you mention it. The sources reviewed do not explain why the two totals differ, so avoid presenting either number as a correction of the other.
The 2020 article’s own wording is: “3,584 variants, to be precise – every combination of 15 colours, six patterns, and two shapes.”

Where tropical fish appear
According to the 2025 official article, tropical fish spawn in warm and lukewarm oceans and in lush caves. In Java Edition, they also appear in mangrove swamps. Bedrock Edition’s habitat list is not covered in the source material used here, so do not assume the Java list applies there without checking.
The official article also states that all tropical-fish species drop the same tropical-fish item when killed. That means the item you receive does not reveal which variant you caught.

How capturing a fish changes what you keep
The 2020 official article “Taking Inventory: Bucket of Fish” explains that fish can be collected with a water bucket. It also states that a captured fish does not despawn after being released, which is different from naturally spawned ocean fish. This matters if you want to keep a specific variant: a bucketed fish placed back in water stays put, while a wild ocean fish may disappear.
An older fishing figure to treat with caution
A community Minecraft Wiki page for the tropical-fish item, seen only as a search-result excerpt, reports that tropical fish can be obtained from fishing at a 1.7% chance per attempt, with an exception in jungle biomes. This is not an official Mojang figure, and the excerpt was not checked against current game versions. Treat it as a starting point for your own verification rather than a settled probability.

How to approach the question for your own game
Because no official source ranks variants, the useful answer depends on which version of the game you are playing. Narrow the question in these ways:
- Edition: Java and Bedrock may list different habitats, so the same variant can be easier or harder to reach depending on which you play.
- Game version: Spawn rules change between updates. A figure from an older wiki page may no longer hold.
- Acquisition method: Naturally spawning fish, fish caught by fishing, and fish captured with a bucket are separate cases with separate evidence.
- Named patterns versus the full range: The 3,072 types are the full range of possible combinations. Common patterns you see often are not the same as the rarest combinations, and the official sources do not separate them.
If you need a definitive ranking for a particular Java or Bedrock version, the reliable route is to check the current official Minecraft articles and the in-game behaviour for that version, rather than relying on a single rarity claim.
