For most players, the best Java version is the one the Minecraft Launcher installs for you. Mojang’s default Launcher setup downloads the runtime that matches the selected Minecraft release, so you only need to choose a Java version yourself if you run a custom Java setup, a third-party launcher, or a server. No single Java version is “best” across all Minecraft releases. The required version depends on the game release you play, and it can change between updates.
Do you need to install Java yourself?
Usually not. The answer depends on how you launch the game:

- Default Launcher setup: The Minecraft Launcher downloads and installs the correct Java version for the release you select. Mojang’s 1.18 release notes state this directly: “If you are using a default setup the Launcher will download and install the correct version.”
- Custom Java path: If you point a launcher profile at a Java installation you manage, you are responsible for supplying a compatible version.
- Third-party launcher: Mojang’s 1.18 notes say that with a custom Java setup or a third-party launcher, your Java installation must be version 17 or above for that release. Other launchers may not install a runtime for you, so check what your launcher expects.
- Dedicated server: The server JAR needs a compatible Java Runtime Environment (JRE) installed on the host machine. The official server download page makes this a requirement but does not name one version that works for every server release.
Match the Java version to the Minecraft release
Java requirements are set per game release, not per year. The table below lists the only release-specific requirements established by the official sources reviewed for this article, with the source and date for each.
| Minecraft release | Required Java version | Source and date | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.18 (Pre-Release 2) | Java 17 or above for custom setups | Mojang release notes, 2021 | Default Launcher setup installs the correct version automatically. |
| 1.20.5 | Java 21 | Mojang technical changes, 2024 | The bundled runtime is the Microsoft build of OpenJDK 21.0.3. |
| Latest 2026 stable release | Not stated in the sources reviewed | Official store system requirements page | Those requirements list platform and hardware only. Check that release’s official changelog before overriding the Launcher’s runtime. |
Do not assume that the 1.20.5 requirement carries forward to newer releases. Java 21 is documented for 1.20.5, and that is the only conclusion the evidence supports.

Check the release before you change anything
If you plan to override the runtime, follow this order:
- Note the exact Minecraft version in your launcher profile, including any modded or snapshot label.
- Open the official changelog or release notes for that version and find any Java requirement.
- Check the Java version your launcher is currently using. If the profile uses the default setup, leave it alone unless the release notes require something different.
- If you use a custom Java path, confirm that the installed version meets the requirement you found in step 2.
- Launch the game and confirm it starts before changing other settings.
A newer Java version is not automatically the correct choice for an older release or a modded setup. A runtime that is newer than the game expects can fail to start it, so match the requirement rather than installing the latest Java.

Servers and modded installations
Server operators should confirm the JRE requirement for the exact server release they run, using the official server download page and that release’s notes. The same release-specific rule applies to servers: the version that worked for one release may not work for another.
Mods and modloaders add their own requirements. Check the modpack’s or modloader’s documentation alongside Minecraft’s. The sources reviewed do not establish compatibility for individual mods, so do not assume a mod works on a given Java version because the base game does.

Java problems versus memory problems
Choosing a Java version does not fix performance issues by itself. Minecraft Help notes that a memory allocation that does not match your system’s RAM or the game version’s requirements can cause crashes, lag, or stuttering. If your game is slow, check the memory allocation in your launcher profile first. Do not expect a newer Java version to raise frame rates; the sources reviewed do not support that claim.
Treat these as separate troubleshooting paths. A game that fails to start with a Java error points to the runtime. A game that starts but stutters points to memory settings and hardware.
