There is no single total size for a Minecraft world. The answer depends on the edition, the world type, and whether “map” means the playable world or the crafted map item in your inventory. In Java Edition, the commonly cited default boundary sits about 30 million blocks from the origin in each horizontal direction. In Bedrock Edition, only the legacy “old” world type has a fixed published size, at 256 by 256 blocks. A crafted map item is a far smaller picture, 128 by 128 pixels, covering an area that depends on its zoom level.
Start with the question you mean
Most confusion comes from using one word for two different things. A world is the full playable space you generate and explore. A map item is the paper-style item made in a crafting grid and filled in as you walk, which shows a square of terrain from above. The map item can never show the whole world, and it has no bearing on how big the world is. Decide which one you are measuring before you quote a number.
Within the world itself, the answer also changes with edition and dimension. Java and Bedrock handle world limits differently, and the Overworld, Nether and End do not share the same vertical measurements.
Java Edition: a default boundary, not explored terrain
Java Edition uses a world border. The figure most often cited for the default border is roughly 30 million blocks from the origin on each horizontal axis. Across the full span, that is about 60 million blocks in each horizontal direction combined. This is a boundary the game enforces, not a count of terrain that has been generated, saved or visited. A player who has explored a few thousand blocks has used a tiny fraction of that space, and nothing in the figure suggests that every block inside the square exists.

The evidence for this number is weaker than the Bedrock figures below. It comes from a community reference and from Mojang issue-tracker search results, not from a current official Java specification page. Border behaviour and defaults can differ between versions, and server operators can change the border. If you need an exact figure for a specific Java release, check that release’s own documentation or the border settings on your server.
Bedrock Edition: legacy, infinite and flat worlds
Bedrock Edition has several world types, and only one of them has a published size. Mojang’s Bedrock FAQ describes the three types players mainly encounter and defines each one.

Old world (finite, legacy)
The FAQ defines an old world as “a finite world type that measures 256 x 256 blocks horizontally, and a maximum height of 128 blocks.” The page does not show a publication year. The same FAQ says that Bedrock 1.18 removed the ability to create new old worlds, while existing ones keep working and can still be converted. So this is a historical size you may meet in older saves, not a measurement of every Bedrock world.
Infinite world
The FAQ names infinite worlds as one of the types players primarily use. It does not give a fixed total size for them, so do not describe an infinite world as having a block count. Its useful limits are the height and depth of the dimension it occupies, covered in the vertical section below.

Flat world
Flat worlds are the second type the FAQ identifies as primarily used. As with infinite worlds, the cited official source gives no total block count for them, so any size you quote for a flat world needs its own source.
Vertical dimensions and chunks
Microsoft’s Bedrock creator documentation, last updated in 2025, sets out the basic units. A chunk is 16 blocks wide and 16 blocks long, and it runs vertically through the full height of the dimension. The vanilla Overworld is 384 blocks tall, while the Nether and End are each 256 blocks tall. These numbers describe the shape of each dimension. They do not add up to one fixed volume for a generated world, because a world’s real extent depends on how far it has been generated and explored.

Crafted map items
A crafted map is 128 by 128 pixels. Its coverage depends on zoom, and a 2018 Minecraft Forum post describes block coverage from 128 by 128 blocks at the closest zoom up to 2048 by 2048 blocks at the widest. The arithmetic makes sense: at one block per pixel, 128 pixels cover 128 blocks, and at sixteen blocks per pixel they cover 2048. The forum is a community source rather than an official policy document, so treat these figures as practical guidance for how a map item works, not as game specifications.

How to state a size correctly
When you write about Minecraft map or world size, include these details with the number:
- Name the item or world: say whether you mean a crafted map item or the playable world.
- Name the edition: Java and Bedrock use different boundaries and world types.
- Name the world type or dimension: an old world, infinite world, flat world, Overworld, Nether or End each has different figures.
- Name the measurement: horizontal boundary, vertical height, chunk size, or map-item coverage are not interchangeable.
- Name the version and date: Java defaults can change between releases, and the Bedrock FAQ does not show a publication year.
- Do not multiply the figures together: combining a horizontal boundary with a vertical height does not give a meaningful total volume for a world.
Answering “how big is a Minecraft world” in these terms gives a truthful answer. A single block count for every world would overstate what the official and community sources establish.
