Start Burning Shores after completing Horizon Forbidden West’s main story through “Singularity.” The official access instructions require that story progress, not a particular character level; PlayStation does not publish a recommended level. After “Singularity,” Aloy receives a call over her Focus that begins the expansion. PlayStation’s entry instructions specify the PS5 version of the game.
Is there a required level for Burning Shores?
No official numeric level requirement or recommendation is stated in the PlayStation materials cited here. The verified gate is story completion: finish the main quest through “Singularity.” A level such as 50 or 60 should not be treated as an official threshold.
How to unlock the expansion
- Play the PS5 version of Horizon Forbidden West.
- Complete the main quest “Singularity.”
- After the quest, wait for Aloy to receive the call over her Focus; it begins Burning Shores.

Should you level up or upgrade gear first?
Once “Singularity” is complete, your level, equipment upgrades, and unlocked skills are personal readiness considerations—not additional published entry requirements. If combat feels difficult, spend time improving your loadout or skills before starting. If you are comfortable with your current build, there is no official level target to wait for.

The official entry instructions specify the PS5 version of Horizon Forbidden West. The US PlayStation Store lists Burning Shores for PS5 and gives its release date as April 19, 2023; availability and store listings can vary by region. See the US PlayStation Store listing. For players who do not own the base game, PlayStation announced that Horizon Forbidden West: Complete Edition includes both the base game and the expansion; it does not remove the “Singularity” story gate (PlayStation Blog announcement).
