They’re earned by completing the College quest line and bring together an alchemy lab, arcane enchanter, bed, safe, and ingredient garden. If you want a conventional house before then, Honeyside is a practical pick; Proudspire Manor is a larger, costlier option in Solitude.
Which Skyrim home suits a mage best?
The Arch-Mage’s Quarters are the strongest match for a mage because they combine role-play with useful crafting facilities in one College location. The quarters begin as Savos Aren’s residence; you take possession after completing the College of Winterhold quest line. The room includes a bed, alchemy lab, arcane enchanter, safe, and ingredient garden. UESP’s Arch-Mage’s Quarters entry describes the residence and its contents.
The College also offers a place to stay before you finish its story: student quarters in the Hall of Attainment. That makes it possible to establish a College-based home without buying property first. UESP’s Hall of Attainment entry covers the student rooms.
How the main mage-home options compare
| Home | Best suited to | Facilities and location | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arch-Mage’s Quarters | A mage who wants a College residence and a ready-made magical workspace | Bed, alchemy lab, arcane enchanter, safe, and ingredient garden; awarded after the College quest line. UESP | Requires College progression; it is not a conventional purchasable city home. |
| Hall of Attainment | A College student who needs a place to stay before becoming Arch-Mage | Student quarters at the College. UESP | Does not offer the full listed set of Arch-Mage facilities. |
| Honeyside | A player who wants an earlier purchasable city home with outdoor utility | Riften home with alchemy and enchanting facilities, a garden, and a private dock. Steam Community guide | Furnishing a children’s room displaces the enchanter. Pocket Tactics |
| Proudspire Manor | A player who values a larger home and Solitude’s shops and services | Alchemy and enchanting facilities, with a broad choice of nearby shops. Pocket Tactics | High cost; the Steam guide lists 25,000 gold before furnishings and 39,000 with furnishings. Steam Community guide |
| Severin Manor | A Dragonborn expansion owner seeking a furnished crafting base | Raven Rock home with alchemy, enchanting, smithing, and storage. Pocket Tactics | Requires the Dragonborn expansion and completion of Severed Cold; a spouse cannot move in. Pocket Tactics |
Choose a home based on when you need it
Before finishing the College quest line
Use the Hall of Attainment if you are already studying at the College and want to avoid buying a house. If you specifically want ownership of a conventional city property, Honeyside is the more practical early alternative in this comparison: it offers both alchemy and enchanting, plus a garden and dock. Its family-room furnishing choice matters if you plan to adopt children, because that room replaces the enchanter.
#1 Best Overall
After becoming Arch-Mage
Move your magical routine to the Arch-Mage’s Quarters if you want facilities close to the College and a home that fits the character. Its ingredient garden complements the two crafting stations, while the safe and bed make it useful as a base rather than just a role-play setting.
If you own Dragonborn
Severin Manor is a strong crafting-focused alternative in Raven Rock, especially if smithing matters alongside alchemy and enchanting. Its household limitation is significant for a family-oriented character: you cannot move a spouse there.

What do Honeyside and Proudspire Manor cost?
Prices vary by home and furnishing choices, and the published figures below come from a user-authored Steam Community guide by Emperor_Eagle (2016), not an official Bethesda price list. Treat the furnished totals as that guide’s figures rather than universal costs across every acquisition or version.
| Home | Guide’s base price | Guide’s price with furnishings | Source qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Honeyside | 8,000 gold | 12,300 gold | Figures listed by Emperor_Eagle’s 2016 Steam Community guide. A newer Pocket Tactics guide gives a variable 5,000–8,000 gold base price depending on acquisition. Steam Community guide; Pocket Tactics |
| Proudspire Manor | 25,000 gold | 39,000 gold | Figures listed by Emperor_Eagle’s 2016 Steam Community guide; other secondary sources give a different upgrade subtotal, so the furnished total should not be treated as universal. Steam Community guide; Pocket Tactics |
On those guide figures, Honeyside is the less expensive route, while Proudspire costs substantially more for a Solitude base. If cost is your deciding factor, verify the actual amount offered in your game before committing to furnishings.
