No single bed defense is best in every Bedwars game. The right choice depends on your mode, how many resources you can gather before the first rush, and how long you need your bed to hold. For solos, a single layer of wool is the usual pick when you want to leave quickly. For doubles, a compact wood-and-wool butterfly-style build is a common starting point. For 3s and 4s, an endstone and glass butterfly variant, or a fuller mixed-block build if the team can afford it, makes more sense. Obsidian is a later-game upgrade once you have emeralds. These recommendations come from player-written Hypixel Forums guides published between 2020 and 2022, so treat them as community strategy rather than current official rankings.
What a bed defense does
A bed defense is the structure you build around your bed so opponents have to break through it before they can reach the bed. The Hypixel Forums guide started by Swap_MC on July 8, 2020 describes it as a structure built around the bed to defend it against attacks when you are unable to defend it yourself at that moment. In practice, that means the defense buys time while you are away gathering resources, fighting, or rushing an enemy bed.
The main defense types
Four designs appear repeatedly in the player guides. They differ mainly in how fast they go up, how many materials they cost, and how much they slow down an attacker.
One-layer wool
This is the simplest option: a single layer of wool over the bed. The guides describe it as quick to place, cheap, easy to repair, and compact. The mahhtt guide, started August 8, 2021, lists its pros as “Quick, Inexpensive, Easily repaired.” Its weakness is durability. Wool is easy to break through with TNT, fireballs, or fast mining, so it holds well only against an opponent who is not prepared to attack immediately.

Wood-and-wool butterfly-style build
Butterfly builds add layers around the bed, usually with a combination of wood and wool. Each extra layer gives defenders more time to react and forces an attacker to spend more time breaking blocks. The cost is more gathering, longer assembly, and a base that is harder to see into and move around. Guides also disagree on what counts as a “butterfly” design, so check the exact layout you are copying.
Endstone and glass butterfly variant
The 3s and 4s guides describe endstone and glass in butterfly layouts as extra protection against common attacks. The trade-off is clear: these materials take more resources and time to gather, and glass in particular reduces visibility around the base.

Obsidian under a cover
Obsidian is the most durable material covered in the guides. The 2020 guide describes an obsidian layer placed under wool, which hides the obsidian and makes mining through the defense more complicated. It is expensive, so it belongs late in a match rather than in the opening.

Choosing a defense by mode
Solos
Start with one wool layer if your priority is the first rush. The 2022 solo layout uses eight wool blocks and four iron ingots. That is a small investment that frees your early resources for attacking. Upgrade only when you have spare time and materials to spend on defense.

Doubles
A wood-and-wool butterfly-style build is a balanced starting point. A 2022 guide calls its pictured wood-and-wool butterfly build the doubles meta and lists 4 gold and 4 iron for it. A 2021 guide also notes that the ThirtyVirus wood-and-wool design is mostly seen in solos or doubles. Both are community observations from those years, not a current competitive ranking.
3s and 4s
If your team can gather resources and coordinate, an endstone and glass butterfly layout gives more protection than wool. A fuller mixed-block build is also described in the guides, but it costs more. It is not necessary for every team, and a team that spends too long building may lose tempo.

Late game with emeralds
When your team has enough emeralds, add an obsidian layer and cover it. The 2022 guide says a single obsidian layer requires 8 emeralds. The 2020 guide describes an obsidian-under-wool build costing 8 emeralds plus 8 iron. These are player-guide figures from those years, not confirmed current shop prices.

The guides give different totals for similar builds. One guide puts a butterfly layout at about 80 iron, while another gives 74 iron plus the cost of the cover. The gap likely reflects different layouts and different cover materials, so compare the exact block list rather than the headline number. Cost also depends on game settings and shop prices, which change over time. Use the listed quantities as a rough guide to relative cost between options, not as a fixed price list.

Limits of this guidance
The main sources are player-written Hypixel Forums guides dated 2020 to 2022. They are not official Hypixel documentation, and they do not establish the current competitive meta as of October 2026. Balance changes, updated shop prices, and newer strategies may have changed what works best. Read the guides as a tested starting point, then check how your server and current match conditions behave. A single good defense depends on your opponents’ tools too, so adapt your build to what you see in each game.
