If Borderlands GOTY Enhanced on PC gets steadily slower the longer you play, the explanation player reports point to most often is a memory leak that builds up during a session. Players describe frame rates falling roughly an hour in, and a full exit and relaunch is the workaround they report helps. No official Gearbox or SEGA statement confirms a leak in this game, so treat that explanation as a community diagnosis to test, not a settled cause.
Confirm you are on the edition players are reporting
The frame-rate decline described in player discussions concerns Borderlands GOTY Enhanced on PC. If you are running the original release, a console version, or another edition, do not assume the same cause applies. Check the edition name in your storefront library before you start changing settings, because the troubleshooting steps below are tailored to the Enhanced PC build.
Test whether a full restart restores performance
The most useful first test separates a session-related problem from an ordinary hardware or settings limit. Players report that a complete restart brings frame rates back, which is consistent with something accumulating while the game runs. It does not prove a leak.
- Launch the game fresh and note your frame rate in a scene you can repeat, such as the same town or the same stretch of road. Use an on-screen counter if you have one.
- Play for a while and note when the drop starts. Players commonly describe this as beginning around the one-hour mark.
- Save, then fully exit the game. Returning to the main menu is not enough. On Windows, confirm no process for the game remains in Task Manager.
- Relaunch and return to the same scene. Compare the frame rate with your first reading.
If performance returns to the starting level and then declines again with play time, the pattern matches what players report. If it does not recover, the cause is more likely something else, and the next sections apply.

Rule out ordinary PC causes
SEGA Support’s general PC performance FAQ, updated March 10, 2026, recommends a short set of checks for any PC game. It is general guidance and does not address Borderlands 1 specifically, but each step is cheap to test.
- Verify game files. On Steam, right-click the game, choose Properties, open Installed Files, and select Verify integrity of game files. Corrupted files can cause stutter that worsens over time.
- Lower demanding settings. Reduce resolution, detail, and shadow quality, then repeat the timed session test above. If the decline slows or stops, the settings were simply too heavy for your machine.
- Update graphics drivers from your GPU vendor.
- Disable mods and any tools that inject code into the game, then test again.
- Check for conflicting software, such as overlays, recording tools, or background applications that consume memory or processing time.
Check memory, VRAM, and heat limits
A session-long slowdown can also come from hardware running out of headroom. SEGA’s FAQ covers three points that apply to any PC:

- System memory. SEGA states: “Anything less than 1GB Free of system memory when you consider all running applications, game included, you may encounter paging.” Paging and repeated stutters can follow. This is a general threshold, not a measured Borderlands figure. Close browsers and other heavy applications before a session and watch free memory as you play.
- Video memory. Higher resolutions use more VRAM, so a setting that runs well at the start can become a constraint over a long session.
- Laptop heat and power. On laptops, heat or running on battery can restrict CPU and GPU performance. Plug in the machine and check that it is not thermally throttling before you blame the game.
Update through the platform where you bought the game
Gearbox Support says digital copies should be updated through the service from which they were purchased. If you are behind on patches, apply them through that storefront. Gearbox’s update article gives this direction but does not promise that a particular patch fixes the frame-rate decline, so check the release notes for any mention of performance or memory before expecting a change.
