VSync, short for vertical synchronization, coordinates Minecraft’s frame output with your display’s refresh cycle. It is intended to reduce visible screen tearing, but on some systems it can make controls feel less responsive or motion look less smooth. Whether to enable it depends on which problem you notice.
What VSync does in Minecraft
A Minecraft options reference describes VSync as limiting the game’s frame rate to the display’s refresh rate. In simple terms, the game and display present frames in step instead of updating at mismatched points in the refresh cycle. Its purpose is synchronization, not making Minecraft render faster. Minecraft Wiki’s options reference describes the setting and its trade-offs.
When frames and display updates are out of step, you may see screen tearing: a visible split in the image, often during camera movement. VSync is intended to reduce that tearing, though the result depends on the display, system, settings, and game version.
Should you turn VSync on or off?
Choose based on what you notice rather than expecting one setting to suit every computer.

- 【INTEGRATED SPEAKERS】Whether you're at work or in the midst of an intense gaming session, our built-in speakers provide rich and seamless audio, all while keeping your desk clutter-free.
- 【EASY ON THE EYES】 Protect your eyes and enhance your comfort with Blue-Light Shift technology. This feature reduces harmful blue light emissions from your screen, helping to alleviate eye strain during long hours of use and promoting healthier viewing habits.
- 【WIDEN YOUR PERSPECTIVE】Our sleek minimal bezel design ensures undivided attention. The nearly bezel-free display seamlessly connects in a dual monitor arrangement, delivering an unobstructed view that lets you focus on more at once, completely distraction-free.
- Try it on if you see distracting tearing and Minecraft still feels smooth and responsive.
- Try it off if controls feel less responsive or motion stutters after enabling it.
- Compare the same scene with the same other settings. Move the camera and check for tearing, control response, and uneven motion; keep the setting that feels better.
VSync can add input latency, and it may contribute to stuttering when the computer cannot produce enough frames. Those are possible trade-offs, not guaranteed outcomes. Minecraft’s frame-rate guide includes turning V-Sync off among possible performance adjustments, but settings and results depend on the system. See Minecraft Wiki’s frame-rate guide.
What to check if the setting behaves differently
Before following edition-specific instructions, identify whether you play Java Edition or Bedrock Edition, your game version, device, and fullscreen mode. Minecraft Help provides separate resources for Java Edition and Bedrock Edition.

Java Edition 26.2: Exclusive Fullscreen and Adaptive Sync
The Java Edition 26.2 release notes say the Exclusive Fullscreen tooltip now explains that Adaptive Sync (Nvidia G-Sync or AMD FreeSync) should work when Exclusive Fullscreen is enabled and will not work when it is disabled. This is a version-specific note; it should not be assumed to apply to Bedrock Edition, other versions, or every fullscreen mode. Read the Java Edition 26.2 release notes.
The same notes say Java 26.2’s F3 FPS display reports the present mode, such as mailbox or fifo relaxed, rather than simply reporting VSync. That detail concerns the Java 26.2 display readout; it is not a general description of how VSync is reported across Minecraft editions and versions.
