Tailoring is the best default first profession for a TBC Classic Warlock focused on PvE, because it can provide powerful early caster gear. For your second profession, choose Enchanting for a direct personal spellpower benefit or Engineering for explosives and utility. There is no universally best pair: the right choice depends on whether you value crafted gear, passive damage, or active tools—and on your game version and phase.
Why Tailoring is the default first profession
Tailoring’s main draw is gear, not a permanent bonus that improves every spell. Wowhead’s TBC Warlock DPS guide says Tailoring supplies much of a Warlock’s pre-raid and best-in-slot gear. It highlights Spellstrike Infusion and, depending on specialization, early-phase pieces from Shadow’s Embrace or Wrath of Spellfire.
That makes Tailoring an especially strong start when you are gearing up. Its value depends on when you obtain and equip the relevant pieces, how long they remain useful, and whether your specialization aligns with the set you craft. The guide notes that Tailoring drops off somewhat in later phases, although recipes continue to appear. If you are already well geared in a later phase, compare the remaining gear you want against the benefit of another profession before committing to a switch.
Choose the second profession by your goal
| Profession | Best fit | What it offers | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Enchanting | Personal spellpower and a straightforward damage focus | Wowhead’s Warlock DPS guide reports 12 spellpower per ring enchant, or 24 spellpower when both rings are enchanted. | The benefit is a direct personal stat bonus, rather than Engineering’s active utility. |
| Engineering | Explosives, gadgets, and PvP or raid utility | The Warlock DPS guide points to Super Sapper Charge for area damage and phase-dependent goggles. The WoW-Professions Warlock overview also recommends Engineering across Warlock specializations and describes its value for DPS and PvP. | The usefulness of particular items, including goggles, depends on phase; do not assume every item is available throughout the game. |
| Jewelcrafting | A situational interest in early access to epic gems or a different profession plan | Wowhead notes that Jewelcrafting can offer early access to epic gems. | The caster gem highlighted by the guide is unique-equipped, limiting the benefit of stacking it. The guide does not rank Jewelcrafting as the standard Warlock pairing. |
The 12-spellpower figure is a game-mechanics value reported by Wowhead’s guide, not an independently measured performance result. The guide explicitly identifies Enchanting as the strongest profession after Tailoring for increasing Warlock DPS. That does not conflict with broader profession overviews that list Tailoring and Engineering for all Warlock specializations: one recommendation prioritizes personal damage, while the other presents a broader class-wide set of options.

Match Tailoring specialization to the gear you want
At 350 Tailoring, the specialization guide lists three paths: Mooncloth, Shadoweave, and Spellfire. Wowhead connects Shadow’s Embrace and Wrath of Spellfire to different specialization choices, so decide which crafted set matters to your character before choosing a path.
See the WoW-Professions TBC Tailoring specializations guide for the specialization paths. Since item availability and value can depend on phase, check the recipes and rules on your server before investing in a specialization.

Quick decision guide
- Building your PvE gear: Start with Tailoring for its early crafted caster pieces.
- Want the clearest passive personal damage benefit: Pair Tailoring with Enchanting for the ring spellpower enchants.
- Want active AoE options, gadgets, or PvP utility: Pair Tailoring with Engineering, and check which relevant items are available in your phase.
- Interested in gems or an alternate profession plan: Consider Jewelcrafting as a situational choice, bearing in mind the unique-equipped limit on the highlighted caster gem.
- Already geared in a later phase: Reassess how much value Tailoring’s remaining recipes provide compared with the alternative profession benefits you would gain.
Check your version and phase before committing
These recommendations come from current Wowhead and WoW-Professions guides, not primary game documentation. The available guides do not establish that every item, phase, or recommendation applies unchanged to every TBC ruleset or server. A separate Wowhead TBC Anniversary professions article exists, but it does not provide a complete comparison of Anniversary with other TBC Classic implementations. Verify profession recipes, gear, and phase timing for the specific version you play.
The guides do not quantify current auction-house costs or profession leveling time, so there is no reliable gold estimate to give. Those costs can affect which option is practical for your character, but the available evidence does not support a numerical comparison.
