What Was the First Platformer? Space Panic vs. Donkey Kong

Space Panic (1980) is the earliest platform-style precursor, while Donkey Kong (1981) is usually called the first true platformer because jumping is central to play. The answer depends on your definition.

The earliest platform-style game is Space Panic (1980). The first game usually called a “true” platformer is Donkey Kong (1981), because jumping over obstacles and gaps is central to its play. Which answer you give depends on whether “platformer” means any game built on platforms and ladders or specifically a game built around jumping.

Short answer by definition

Historians do not agree on a single winner, so the answer depends on the definition you use:

  • Broad definition (a game where the player runs, climbs, and moves across platforms): Space Panic, released in 1980, is the usual early pick. Activision Blizzard’s 2023 history of the genre says it should receive the early credit, having come out about a year before Donkey Kong.
  • Narrow definition (a game where jumping is the core mechanic): Donkey Kong, released in 1981, is the usual pick. Guinness World Records calls it the first “true” platform videogame, while noting that Space Panic is sometimes credited as the first platformer.

What separates the two games

The two candidates are close in date, and both put a character on a series of platforms connected by ladders. The difference is what the player can do on them.

Question Space Panic (1980) Donkey Kong (1981)
Release year 1980, per Activision Blizzard Newsroom (2023) 1981, per Nintendo’s official history and Guinness World Records
Platforms and climbing Walkable platforms and ladder climbing, per Activision Blizzard and an academic thesis from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Platforms and ladders across a multi-level arcade stage, per the International Video Game Hall of Fame
Jumping No jump mechanic, according to the academic thesis Jumping over obstacles and gaps is central; the Hall of Fame describes it as the first game to feature jumping
How it is usually labeled Early platform-game precursor; the first platformer under a broad definition The first true platform game under a narrower definition

Why Space Panic gets the early credit

Activision Blizzard’s 2023 newsroom history of the genre defines a platformer as a game whose main objective is to run, jump, or climb across staggered or uneven platforms. Under that wording, Space Panic qualifies because the player traverses platforms and climbs ladders. The article makes the point directly:

“1981’s Donkey Kong is often credited as the first platformer, but that title should actually go to a lesser-known game called Space Panic (released about a year earlier).”

That is an editorial claim by Eric Alt, published June 14, 2023, and it reflects one publisher’s view rather than a settled consensus.

Why Donkey Kong gets the “first true” label

Jumping is the reason most histories separate Donkey Kong from its predecessor. Nintendo’s official history says it developed and distributed the coin-operated Donkey Kong in 1981. Guinness World Records, in its record entry, states: “The first true platform videogame was the 1981 Nintendo arcade game Donkey Kong.” The International Video Game Hall of Fame describes it as the first game to feature jumping.

The academic thesis from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria frames the same distinction. It treats Space Panic as a predecessor and credits Donkey Kong with making jumping a central mechanic. That thesis also states that there is no consensus on the first platformer.

Which answer to use

  • If you need one name for a general audience, say Space Panic was the earliest platform-based precursor and Donkey Kong is the first game built around jumping.
  • If your definition requires jumping, name Donkey Kong (1981) and cite Guinness or the Hall of Fame.
  • If your definition is any platform-and-ladder game, name Space Panic (1980) and cite Activision Blizzard.

What the sources do not settle

The sources agree on the year, with 1980 for Space Panic and 1981 for Donkey Kong. They do not give an exact release date for Space Panic, and none of them establishes that one game was the first in every sense. Information about current editions, arcade cabinets, or manuals was not checked for this article, so this piece covers only the historical classification.

Donkey Kong is the stronger answer when “platformer” is understood as a game built on jumping. Space Panic is the stronger answer when the term covers any game built on walkable platforms and ladders.
