If you already own Special Edition, Bethesda offers a separate Anniversary Upgrade; if not, the full Anniversary Edition is the relevant option. For other products, “special” and “anniversary” are overlapping labels—not fixed promises about what is included.
What do “Special Edition” and “Anniversary Edition” mean?
Special edition is a broad label for a version distinguished by particular content, presentation, or technical features. Anniversary edition identifies a release tied to a milestone, but does not specify what changed. The labels can overlap: ONIX book-industry metadata classifies anniversary editions under “Special edition” and advises publishers to describe the edition’s exact nature. EDItEUR’s ONIX codelist makes clear that the label alone is not a contents list.
Publishers use the terms in different ways. Scholastic called its tenth-anniversary release of The Hunger Games a “Special Edition,” while its Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone release was called a “special anniversary edition.” Those examples demonstrate overlap, not a universal standard. Scholastic’s 2018 announcement and its 2008 announcement describe the specific releases.
What extras might an edition include?
Depending on the product, an edition may add bonus text, interviews, archival material, new artwork, packaging, or technical features. For example, Scholastic said its 2018 Hunger Games Special Edition would contain more than 50 pages of bonus material, including an interview with Suzanne Collins, an archival conversation with Walter Dean Myers, and a timeline. The announcement also mentioned a new paperback cover and a boxed-set option. These are that release’s stated features, not a general definition of “special edition.”

Scholastic’s 2008 announcement for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone described exclusive bonus material, new cover art, and a four-color frontispiece. In other media, a special edition may instead be distinguished by supplements or technical characteristics; the Office québécois de la langue française also cautions that “collector” or “deluxe” naming does not necessarily mean a more complete or higher-quality release. Its entry on “édition spéciale” is specific to the French-language term.
What is the difference in Skyrim?
Bethesda’s current Skyrim Anniversary Edition product page describes the full Anniversary Edition as including the core game, the official add-ons Dawnguard, Hearthfire, and Dragonborn, plus pre-existing and new Creation Club content. Bethesda describes that content as including quests, dungeons, bosses, weapons, and spells.
If you already own Skyrim Special Edition, Bethesda also offers an Anniversary Upgrade. The Special Edition is required for that upgrade. In practical terms, compare the full edition if you do not own Special Edition, and check the upgrade listing for your platform if you do.

Why older Skyrim details need a date
Bethesda’s November 5, 2021 FAQ gave launch MSRPs of USD $49.99 for the full edition and USD $19.99 for the upgrade, while warning that prices and availability could differ by region and platform. Those are historical launch prices, not current prices.

How to compare editions before buying
- Identify the exact product. These names are used across books, games, films, and other media; the meaning depends on the title and its publisher.
- Compare the stated contents. Look for expansions, bonus material, items, artwork, packaging, and technical features rather than inferring them from the edition name.
- Look for an explicit content-change statement. “Anniversary” does not by itself mean the underlying work has been revised or expanded.
- For Skyrim, account for what you own. Bethesda presents a full Anniversary Edition and an Anniversary Upgrade for Special Edition owners.
- Verify platform and format. Availability, included content, and download requirements may vary; read the current platform-specific listing, especially for physical copies.
