For launcher-wide options, open Settings in the Minecraft Launcher. For Minecraft: Java Edition settings such as a game version, resolution, or JVM arguments, go to Minecraft: Java Edition > Installations, select a profile, and open its edit screen. The right path depends on what you want to change.
Where to find launcher-wide settings
Open the Minecraft Launcher’s Settings area for options that apply to the launcher itself, including language and accessibility features. To check for launcher updates, Minecraft’s official download page gives the route Settings > About: Minecraft: Download Minecraft & Server Software. The exact position or appearance of the Settings control may vary by operating system or launcher build; the official page does not specify one universal button location.
Where to change Java Edition installation settings
Java Edition options belong to an installation profile rather than the launcher’s general Settings area. Use this path:
- Select Minecraft: Java Edition in the Launcher.
- Open Installations.
- Select the installation you want to edit to open its edit screen.
- Choose More Options to access the profile’s additional settings, including JVM arguments.

Change JVM arguments or memory allocation
The JVM arguments field is in the installation’s edit screen under More Options, not in the general launcher Settings area. Memory allocation is adjusted in that field. Minecraft Help explains how to check or change it in Fix Minecraft: Java Edition Game Crashes by Checking Memory Allocation. Avoid copying a memory value without considering your computer’s available RAM and the game version.
Change the game version
To play a different Java Edition version, create or edit an installation from the Installations tab and select the desired version for that profile. Then launch the saved installation. See Minecraft Help’s instructions for changing Java Edition game versions.

Back up worlds before changing versions
Back up your worlds before opening them with an older game version or experimenting with relevant Java settings. Minecraft Help warns that opening a world in an older version can permanently damage it. Keep a separate copy of important saves so you can restore them if needed.

The launcher’s Settings area controls launcher-wide preferences. The Java installation editor controls profile-specific launch options, such as version, resolution, and JVM arguments. Settings inside a running Minecraft world are a separate area; the paths above do not open those in-game menus.
