Buy a game key from the publisher’s own store, or from a retailer the publisher names as an approved distributor for that specific game. Before you pay, confirm the activation platform, region, edition, and seller identity. A key that works on one platform or in one country can fail on another, and a key from a seller without a distribution agreement can be revoked after you buy it.
The guidance below comes from Ubisoft Help and Steam Support. Retailer and platform terms change, so check the live product page and the policy page before you buy.

Start with the publisher’s own store or approved list
Authorization is set game by game, not by retailer. The publisher’s own store is the safest starting point. If it does not sell the key you want, look for the publisher’s approved-distributor page for that title.
Ubisoft’s approved-distributor guidance shows how this works. It names specific retailers for Ubisoft games and warns that a retailer without a digital distribution agreement may provide an invalid or illegally obtained key that can later be revoked. Ubisoft’s list is only for Ubisoft titles. A key for a different publisher’s game needs that publisher’s own list or store.

Ubisoft’s named distributors
For Ubisoft games, Ubisoft Help lists the following approved distributors:
- Amazon, through several country-specific stores
- Green Man Gaming
- Humble Bundle
- Level Up
- Meta
- Microsoft Store
- Nuuvem
- Epic Games Store
- Gamesplanet
- GameStop
- GOG
- Steam
- Ubisoft Store
- Other region-specific stores
Ubisoft describes this list as publisher-specific and subject to change. Use it as a reference for Ubisoft games. Do not treat it as approval for every publisher’s title.
Retail keys sold outside a store
Steam Support states that “many products are sold by retailers other than Steam.” That is why the seller check matters even when the game is on Steam. A retail key bought from a shop or reseller can be valid, but the seller’s authorization and support process decide what happens if the key fails.
Check the platform and edition before checkout
A key is tied to a platform. Steam Support says the packaging or delivery email identifies whether a retail or digital key is meant for Steam. A key intended for another platform produces an invalid product code error when you try to redeem it on Steam.

Before buying, confirm:
- The platform (Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, or a console store)
- The edition, including whether a deluxe or season edition includes add-on content
- The region and language stated on the product page
- The product type, since a key may be for a physical or digital copy depending on the retailer
Redeeming a Steam key
- Open the Steam client and sign in to the account you want to use.
- Select Games, then Activate a Product on Steam.
- Enter the key exactly as delivered, then follow the prompts.
- If Steam reports an invalid product code, stop and check the platform on the packaging or delivery email before trying again.
Confirm region and language
Ubisoft Help says: “We strongly recommend that you purchase games and content from digital retailers within your country or region.” A key bought from a different region may be region-locked, or it may not support your language. Check the region on the product page, not just the retailer’s home country.
Verify the seller and understand revocation
Keys can be revoked. Steam’s revoked-key guidance explains that a publisher may revoke a key, for example if it was obtained by fraudulent means. A key from an unauthorized source can be invalid even after activation succeeds once.
Steam recommends contacting the seller for a refund if a third-party website sold the key. Before buying, look for:
- A named seller, not only a storefront name
- A written refund and support policy on the product or checkout page
- A stated delivery method and delivery timing
- A listing that matches the game, edition, and region you need
Compare the final price, not the headline discount
Compare the total at checkout, including taxes and fees, with the same platform, edition, and region across sellers. A lower headline price can disappear once fees or a region mismatch are included. Prices change often, so check the total on the day you buy.

Understand refunds before you buy
Purchases made through Steam
Steam’s standard refund guidance says Valve will issue a refund for a game requested within 14 days of purchase if it has been played for less than two hours. Steam also says buyers may submit requests outside those rules for review. The policy covers purchases made through Steam. It does not cover purchases made outside the store, such as third-party CD keys.
Keys bought from a retailer
If you bought a key from a retailer, Steam directs you to that retailer for support when the key was purchased there. Keep your receipt and the key-delivery email, since the retailer will ask for them. Retailer refund windows are set by the retailer, so read them before checkout.
Avoid keys traded through Steam
Steam does not support CD-key trading through its trading interface. Steam warns that keys offered in trades are often fake, used, for a different game, or restricted to a different region. If a key offer is made through a trade, treat it as unauthorized and do not buy it.
Step-by-step buying process
- Find the publisher and open its official store or approved-distributor guidance for the game.
- Choose a listed retailer that sells the exact game and edition for your country or region.
- On the product page, verify the platform, region and language, edition, seller name, delivery method, and return or refund rules.
- Compare the checkout total, including taxes and fees, not just the headline price.
- Save the receipt and the key-delivery message in case activation fails.
If the key does not work
- Invalid product code on Steam: the key is probably intended for another platform or is a retail key meant for a different product. Check the packaging or delivery email for the platform.
- Region or language error: the key may be region-locked. Contact the seller with your receipt and the product page.
- Key revoked: contact the seller. For a key from a third-party website, Steam suggests requesting a refund from the seller.
- Key bought from a retailer: follow that retailer’s support process and keep your receipt.
What the evidence does not establish
No reliable market-wide figures are available from these official publisher and platform sources. They do not say how much of the key market is unauthorized, how many keys are revoked, or what discounts are typical. The reliable signals are seller authorization, the platform and region match, and a clear support policy.
