The Master Ball has the highest catch certainty: in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl (BDSP), the official guide says it can catch any wild Pokémon without fail. If you want to save it, there is no single best alternative for every encounter. The right choice depends on the game and the situation.
Which Poké Ball should you use if you are saving the Master Ball?
For BDSP, choose a ball whose special condition matches the encounter. The official BDSP catching guide compares these balls with an Ultra Ball, but does not give exact numerical multipliers:

These are conditional recommendations, not a universal ranking. When more than one condition applies, the official guide does not establish which ball will produce the best odds; choose based on the specific game and encounter.
Why there is no universal best ordinary ball
A ball is only one part of a capture attempt. The target species’ catch rate, its current and maximum HP, its status, and the ball’s modifier all affect the odds. Smogon’s capture-mechanics guide describes these factors for the generations it covers, including a catch-rate range of 1–255. Lowering HP and inflicting a status condition can improve the chance, but the precise result depends on the game and Pokémon.

In the generations covered by that guide, sleep and freeze have stronger status modifiers than paralysis, burn, or poison. Treat that comparison as generation-specific rather than a rule for every later Pokémon game.
Ball multipliers change between games
Even a familiar ball may not have the same effect in every generation. Serebii’s cross-game capture table lists Quick Ball’s first-turn multiplier as 4 in earlier games and 5 from Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon onward. It lists Dusk Ball’s conditional multiplier as 3.5 before those games and 3 afterward. These figures are generation-specific examples; they should not be applied to BDSP or another game without checking that game’s mechanics.

Quick answer: are Quick Balls better than Ultra Balls?
In BDSP, the official guide says a Quick Ball has a higher success rate than an Ultra Ball when thrown on the first turn. That does not make it the better choice throughout a battle or in every Pokémon game. If the encounter instead matches another ball’s condition—or the battle has continued for several turns—use the relevant game’s guidance rather than assuming Quick Ball always wins.

How to improve your odds with a non-Master Ball
- Check the ball’s condition in the specific game you are playing; effects and availability vary across games.
- Use the target’s HP and status to your advantage where practical. The exact benefit depends on the game and target.
- In BDSP, match the ball to the situation: for example, Quick Ball on turn one, Dusk Ball at night or in caves, or Timer Ball after several turns.
