No Pokémon evolves into Mewtwo. Mewtwo does not evolve at all, and Mew, the Pokémon it is most often linked with, is not its previous evolutionary stage.
Why Mewtwo has no pre-evolution
Mewtwo’s official Pokédex entry states plainly: “This Pokémon does not evolve.” That line settles the evolution question. A Pokémon with no evolutionary line has no stage that comes before it, so no species can be listed as the one that turns into Mewtwo.

The same entry classifies Mewtwo as a Genetic Pokémon and describes it as created by genetic manipulation. Its official Singapore Pokédex text puts it this way: “Mewtwo is a Pokémon that was created by genetic manipulation. However, even though the scientific power of humans created this Pokémon’s body, they failed to endow Mewtwo with a compassionate heart.” Mewtwo’s origin is an engineered one, not a natural growth from another species.
Why Mew gets mentioned so often
Mew and Mewtwo are tied together in the franchise’s lore. Another official Pokédex entry says Mew’s DNA is almost the same as Mewtwo’s. That is a genetic relationship: the two share their genetic makeup. It is not an evolution, and the official text does not describe Mew giving birth to Mewtwo, changing into it, or growing into it.

When people ask “Does Mew evolve into Mewtwo?” or “Is Mewtwo an evolution of Mew?”, the accurate answer is no on both counts. The two are related by origin, and that is all the sources establish.
Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y
The confusion usually comes from Mega Evolution. Mewtwo has two Mega forms, Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y. Pokémon’s official Pokémon Legends: Z-A notice, dated December 2, 2025, says Mewtwo can Mega Evolve into Mega Mewtwo X while holding Mewtwonite X, or into Mega Mewtwo Y while holding Mewtwonite Y.
Rank #2
Mega Evolution is a temporary power-up that happens to a Pokémon that already exists. It does not create a new species or add a stage before Mewtwo. The Mega forms are things Mewtwo itself becomes, not ancestors that produce it. The same notice also covers Mega Stones and how to reach Mewtwo’s extra side mission in Legends: Z-A, but it does not change Mewtwo’s ordinary evolution status.

Keeping genetic origin and evolution separate
Two distinctions clear up most of the confusion. The first is between genetic origin and evolutionary lineage. Mew and Mewtwo are connected by origin, but Mewtwo sits at the start of its own line with nothing before it. The second is between ordinary evolution and Mega Evolution. Ordinary evolution changes a species into a later stage; Mega Evolution is a temporary form Mewtwo takes during battle, using a Mega Stone. Neither of these produces a Pokémon that comes before Mewtwo.
