Mario has the clearer documented lead in franchise game sales, but that does not prove he is more recognized or preferred by audiences today. The answer depends on what “popular” means—and the available figures for Mario and Sonic do not use comparable definitions.
What does “more popular” mean?
Popularity can refer to game sales, downloads, name recognition, search interest, film audiences, merchandise sales, or stated preference. Those measures have different scopes and dates, so one cannot stand in for all the others.
The sources available here establish a strong Mario game-sales figure, but they do not provide a recent, directly comparable survey that measures whether a defined audience recognizes or prefers Mario over Sonic. There is therefore no evidence-based way to declare an overall winner across every meaning of popularity.
What the franchise game-sales figures show
Guinness World Records reports that sales of Mario series games and spin-offs reached at least 893.4 million units as of June 10, 2025. This is a published franchise game-sales total, attributed to Guinness World Records; it is the clearest broad sales figure in the available sources. Guinness World Records’ Mario record.

SEGA’s official Sonic franchise page says the franchise has sold “over 16.6 billion units (including digital downloads) in total.” However, the page does not explain the unit scope sufficiently to compare that number with Mario game sales. It should not be treated as proof that Sonic outsells Mario: the two totals are not shown to count the same things.
Individual game figures are a different comparison
Nintendo reports Mario Kart World at 15.39 million worldwide software units as of June 30, 2026. Nintendo says its software-unit reporting includes bundled and downloadable versions. That number describes one game’s performance, not the size of the Mario franchise or audience preference between characters.

For Sonic, SEGA announced that Sonic X Shadow Generations had sold over 1 million units worldwide following its October 25, 2024 launch. SEGA says this title-specific total includes physical units and digital downloads for each platform. It cannot be directly compared with Mario Kart World’s later, differently scoped result to determine which character is more popular.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the evidence can—and cannot—settle
- Franchise game sales: Mario has the clearer documented case in the figures above, because Guinness World Records gives a dated total for Mario series games and spin-offs.
- Recognition or preference today: The cited material does not establish which character is more recognized or preferred by a defined audience.
- Wider cultural reach: SEGA describes Sonic as an international multimedia franchise, including television and games, but the available figures do not create a comparable measure of cultural reach for Mario and Sonic.
Without a comparable audience study—with a stated question, sample, geography, and date—or consistently scoped figures for other measures, claims that one character is universally more popular go beyond what these sources establish.
