What you get in Master Collection
The collection is the clearest single-purchase route through the three classic 3D entries. KOEI TECMO gives the original release years as 2007 for Sigma, 2009 for Sigma 2, and 2012 for Razor’s Edge. The publisher describes the games as challenging action built around both offensive and defensive moves; that is a publisher characterization, not an independent difficulty rating. The PlayStation listing says the collection includes previously released modes and DLC costumes, while noting that some features and modes vary or are absent. Its listing is for PS4 and says the game is playable on PS5, with a caveat that some PS4 features may be absent. Why the Sigma distinction matters
If you want the original releases specifically, the collection is not that version of the first two games: it contains NINJA GAIDEN Σ and NINJA GAIDEN Σ2. The Sigma editions are the versions identified in the collection’s official contents, while NINJA GAIDEN 2 Black is a separate current option. Confirm the exact game and edition shown on the store page before purchasing.

Starting with NINJA GAIDEN 4
NINJA GAIDEN 4 is a sensible starting point if its newer release and premise are what appeal to you. The official outline introduces Yakumo, a young Raven Clan ninja and descendant of the Dark Dragon, while Ryu Hayabusa opposes Yakumo’s efforts to break the Dark Dragon’s seal. It places the story in near-future Tokyo. The official product descriptions reviewed here do not establish that earlier games are required reading, so starting with this release is a reasonable editorial choice for newcomers drawn to its setting.
Team NINJA’s current series portal lists NINJA GAIDEN 4 (October 21, 2025), NINJA GAIDEN 2 Black (January 23, 2025), and NINJA GAIDEN: Master Collection (June 10, 2021), with platform listings. What the franchise’s history does—and doesn’t—tell you
